Now factor in a pandemic!
Oregon moved its traditional fall high school soccer season to the spring for the Class of 2021, and there was no state tournament or even an all-state team in each class.
Therefore, we turned to our club contacts to help flesh out a preseason All-Metro squad for Portland:
FORWARDS: Lincoln senior Maxima Edwards is a versatile player who can play either forward or midfield positions. … Quentin Strange is the lone junior on the list, but certainly an up-and-coming talent. He was part of the US Youth Soccer West Region team, playing on a squad with mostly players a year older in high school. … Franklin senior Caden Davis Caden Davis F Franklin | 2022 OR is one of the holdovers from Franklin’s 2019 state title-winning team. … Andrew Martinez Andrew Martinez F Centennial | 2022 OR was a third-team all-area honoree after the 2021 spring season.
MIDFIELDERS: Tualatin senior Ben Augee Ben Augee M Tualatin | 2022 OR put in healthy numbers in the spring. He’s a former Portland Timbers Academy player who now plays for United PDX. … Franklin senior Darren Green is touted by cub coaches as an exceptional athlete. … Liberty senior Anthony Godinez was part of the US Youth Soccer West Region ODP squad during the 2020 rotation. … A new coach at La Salle might be in for a good run with both Strange and senior midfielder Mizael Harris returning. … Central Catholic senior Carter Keyes was pretty effective on the left win last season and should be a standout again this fall.
DEFENDERS: While Sunset senior Michael Russak is our only listed defender, a few of the midfielders are defensive players, as well. Either as defensive mids or club defenders. In any case, the 6-foot-3 Russack gets the nod as the top defender in the city this fall.
GOALKEEPER: Riverdale senior Gabriel Stevens was an honorable mention all-league pick last season, but club coaches think he could be the best in the Portland metro area this fall.
