The VA Rush 2007 girls took care of business in their state cup game vs visiting Northern Virginia SC coming away with a 2-0 victory to move on in the tournament. Arianna Herwick opened the scoring in the first half with a quality finish from inside the box and Rush carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. Rush was the better side in the first half and early in the second half but NVSC started connecting passes and put pressure on the Rush back line and had a few decent chances to even up the score in the second half but came away empty. After NVSC made a tactical change to try and even the score by going to three in the back with about 10 minutes to play, Mollyjean Wick played a perfect through ball to a streaking Ainsley Mathews-Jamison who slotted in home from close range to put the game away with three minutes to play. VA Rush will travel to Blacksburg to face New River United in the State Cup quarterfinals on Oct. 2.

An outstanding center back, she is super composed for a young player and has complete trust of her coach and teammates. Looked to advance the attack up the middle to her midfielders but had no problem slowing down the attack and playing out wide or back to her keeper. A very physical player who is not afraid to use her body to slow down attacking forwards.

Very sure hands on high shots and great technique getting down to the ground on low driven shots. Made most saves look routine through proper positioning and knew when to come off of her line. Both goals she conceded were on shots where she was in proper position but was just beaten by good finishes.

A fast, quick striker who can get in behind defenders. Shows good speed down the flanks and is able to cut inside and go to goal or cross into the box. Plays fast and is a good dribbler at speed who is not afraid to take on defenders. Very active on the pitch and is always looking for open space to move into.

A complete and versatile soccer player! Her coach switched her from center back to forward when they were down a goal late in the game. Good speed and is easily able to cover opposing forwards. Excellent decision maker who finds the open player to get the attack started. Looked just as comfortable in the attack third as she did defending.

One of the younger girls on the pitch, played with passion and desire. Played both outside back positions and looked comfortable defending and attacking. Every time I looked she was around the ball and involved in the game. Scored the opening goal of the match by supporting the attack and making a run into the box.
