The 2006 Beach FC U16 Girls started off their season in the Virginia Premier Soccer League ECNL Regional League the last weekend of August with two clean sheet wins. The Hampton Roads Soccer Complex hosted the North/South crossover matches against two northern foes, Great Falls Reston (GFR) and Vienna. The first match was 2-0 win versus GFR and then another 2-0 win in the second match vs. Vienna. Interestingly, this squad is made up of eight girls from Kellam High School in Virginia Beach. While scouting their game against Vienna, and after reviewing my notes, I noticed that five of the girls who stood out were all from Kellam. Kellam went 10-1-2 last year and made it to the Region 6A final where it lost to a talented Cosby team 2-0. These girls were only freshmen on that team and were major contributors to their success.
Players to watch:
F Lauren Croley, Kellam, Class of 2024 (not pictured)
A true forward and clinical finisher. Moves well off the ball, finds open space and will shoot from anywhere in the box if it is available. Not afraid to take on defenders 1 v 1 but also plays to others around her. Had eight goals and 11 assists in 13 games as a freshman for Kellam. Can easily get in behind defenders on through balls using her speed and smarts.
M Alyssa Chuderewicz, Kellam, Class of 2024
A very versatile midfielder who controls the middle of the pitch. Plays both attacking and defending center mid and looks at ease doing both. Great first touch, and when she receives the ball she immediately looks at her available options. Drops in to cover on defense when needed but quickly transitions back to the attack once her team gains possession.
D Ava Chuderwicz, Kellam, Class of 2024
A great outside left back who effortlessly gets up in the attack by making wide runs. Quick transition both ways when possession is gained or lost. Has an undeniable relationship with her twin sister Alyssa on the pitch, they look for each other and just seem to know where the other is going to be. Distributes well but is not afraid to keep the ball wide while making penetrating dribbles on the outside to draw defenders out.
M Lilly Turner, Kellam, Class of 2024
Plays on the right side and looks to stay wide and get open. Not afraid of a challenge, she always seems to want the ball. She looks to attack 1 v 1 and has great footwork on the dribble. Very solid first touch and provides quality service to her forwards. Looks to penetrate deep and wide into the final third with a mindset of getting around the outside back or to cross. A great motor, she gets up and down the pitch with ease.
D Avery Spell, Kellam, Class of 2024
Avery is a calm presence as a center back who is comfortable moving up and helping her teammates keep possession or joining the attack from center circle. Makes good decisions on finding the open player to get the attack started. Has good speed and is not afraid to be physical with opposing teams forwards. Her steady play was key in Beach FC’s two shutout wins over the weekend.
