There are several current and recent high school players who could be wearing Red, White, and Blue when the U.S. makes its bid for the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. Today, we take a look at players called into the upcoming U20 national training camp who also played high school soccer in 2021.
In total, 28 have been called into the U.S. Under-20 October Training, which starts Oct. 17, and it includes the reigning Gatorade National Girls Soccer High School Player of the Year.
[player_tooltip player_id="29265" first="Maggie" last="Cagle"], Arcadia (Ariz.), Sr.: Cagle was selected as the Gatorade Arizona Girls Soccer Player of the Year following her modified winter season, which ended in March. The Virginia commit had 14 goals and 12 assists in 10 matches.
[player_tooltip player_id="29289" first="Elise" last="Evans"], Woodside (Calif.), Sr.: The Stanford commit is one of the nation’s top prospects as a defender, but she made an impact on the field as an attacker in high school this past spring. California players during the winter season, but that was pushed later into the spring for 2021. Evans, playing her first year for the high school team, guided Woodside to an undefeated regular season and a CIF NorCal semifinal appearance before losing to eventual champ Archbishop Mitty.
[player_tooltip player_id="29288" first="Annie" last="Karich"], Mater Dei (Calif.), Sr.: As a junior this past spring, Karich led Mater Dei of the CIF Division 1 quarterfinals. The Santa Clara commit was named to the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 first team and also scored the lone goal for Mater Dei in its final match.
[player_tooltip player_id="27050" first="Margo" last="Matula"], St. Pius (Texas), Jr.: Matula earned TAPPS all-state honors as a sophomore and she was a finalist for Houston Player of the Year by VYPE. Her freshman year, she was an all-district performer. Matula has been named co-captain for the upcoming 2021-2022 season.
[player_tooltip player_id="27105" first="Molly" last="McDougal"], Prosper (Texas), Sr.: The Florida commit helped Prosper to a 24-1 season, losing only in the playoffs to Flower Mound, which went on to win the 6A state title in April and finish as the FAB 50 No. 1 winter team. McDougal was the district’s defensive player of the year and was a first-team Dallas Morning News and all-state selection. She had nine assists as a center back on a team that allowed only 10 goals in 25 matches.
[player_tooltip player_id="18937" first="Mia" last="Minestrella"], Redondo (Calif.), Jr.: The Duke commit played high school soccer at Redondo this past spring after her club team’s league opted not to play. Minestrella ended up scoring 18 goals and was named the Daily Breeze Player of the Year in what was her first, and perhaps only, year of high school play this past spring.
[player_tooltip player_id="32924" first="Nona" last="Reason"], Noblesville (Ind.), Sr.: Reason, who is from California, landed in Indiana for her senior season and for much of the year helped Noblesville to a FAB 50 No. 1 fall ranking. The North Carolina commit, however, started the season sharing time in goal with another NCAA Division I prospect before injuries shut down her high school season this fall. In five matches, she allowed only two goals.
[player_tooltip player_id="29295" first="Julia" last="Saunicheva"], Leland (Calif.), Sr.: The UCLA commit averaged more than a goal per match while playing in the midfield to lead Leland to a 9-2-2 season this past spring. Interestingly, Leland lost its first and last matches of the season and went undefeated in between.
[player_tooltip player_id="29316" first="Evelyn" last="Shores"], Westminster (Ga.), Jr.: Shores, a North Carolina commit, was part of a stellar Westminster squad that was the Spring FAB 50 No. 1 team this past spring. She played in the midfield as Westminster went 21-0, outscoring its opponents 154-7. Westminster won the state title 7-0 in May with Shores scoring one of the goals.
[player_tooltip player_id="19052" first="Alyssa" last="Thompson"], Harvard-Westlake (Calif.), Jr.: Thompson was the Gatorade National and CIF Southern Section Player of the Year after guiding a loaded Harvard-Westlake team to a 19-0 season. The Stanford commit netted 48 goals and teamed up with her freshman sister to score all seven of Harvard-Westlake’s goals in the regional final.
[player_tooltip player_id="22252" first="Amelia" last="White"], Homestead (Ind.), Sr.: The Penn State commit is clearly a frontrunner for the PrepSoccer.net Fall National Player of the Year honors. Heading into the weekend, White has guided Homestead to a 19-0 showing with 23 goals and 15 assists. Her most significant performance this fall was netted three goals on Wednesday as FAB 50 No. 6 Homestead topped two-time defending state champion and current FAB 50 No. 1 Noblesville 4-2 in the state playoffs.
