We’re just a week away from the state soccer playoffs in Wisconsin. Let’s take look at some player of the year candidates as the season hits the homestretch.
F [player_tooltip player_id="18490" first="Mitchell" last="Dryden"], Whitefish Bay, Sr.
The other half to the state’s top attacking duo, Dryden has 21 goals and 14 assists as of Oct. 7. Whitefish Bay is ranked No. 1 in Division 2.
D [player_tooltip player_id="18476" first="Langdon" last="Gryglas"], Arrowhead, Sr.
The Brown commit has been sensational in the backline for state power Arrowhead. Gryglas’ performance has helped Arrowhead to only concede more than two goals once this season and that was to fellow state power Whitefish Bay. Arrowhead has seven clean sheets on the year.
F [player_tooltip player_id="32823" first="Ben" last="Grimm"], Whitefish Bay, Sr.
Grimm has been fantastic for the state’s No. 2-ranked program. So far, Grimm has 27 goals to go along with 17 assists and has been on a tear lately.
F [player_tooltip player_id="18437" first="Denis" last="Krioutchenkov"], Shorewood, Sr.
His stats might be a bit inflated due to the level of the opponents, but make no mistake about it Krioutchenkov is one of the most dynamic players in the state. He has netted 42 goals in 16 matches this season.
M Max Lynch, Verona, Sr.
Lynch is a player who is not talked about as much. His impressive playmaking skills have been impactful to his team’s success and should not go unnoticed. Verona is currently ranked No. 3 in Division 1.
F [player_tooltip player_id="32548" first="Nick" last="Magner"], Marquette, Sr.
Wisconsin powerhouse Marquette keeps reloading every year. And this time, it’s [player_tooltip player_id="32548" first="Nick" last="Magner"]’s turn to lead his team with 16 goals and four assists. Marquette is 16-1-1 with its only loss to an out-of-state team.
D [player_tooltip player_id="18509" first="Sam" last="Magner"], Marquette, Sr.
It’s often said that defense wins championships, and with a defender like [player_tooltip player_id="18509" first="Sam" last="Magner"] it’s easy to understand why Marquette is 16-1-1 heading into last weekend. Magner anchors a defense that has allowed only 10 goals this season playing a national schedule, which included contests against elite teams from Missouri, Illinois, Colorado, and Kansas.
F/M [player_tooltip player_id="18504" first="Owen" last="Marshall"], Marquette, Jr.
It’s very likely Marshall is the preseason favorite to win this award next year. But his play as a junior has been nothing but terrific and should be considered for this award. Has scored 11 goals and served up seven assists this season.
M [player_tooltip player_id="18515" first="Valentin" last="Sandoval"], Marquette, Sr.
Sandoval won’t put up the eye-popping numbers as some attacking players in the state, but anyone watching Marquette will see how important he is to controlling the game. Besides, when he Hilltoppers need a clutch goal or assist, he seems to be the player who delivers. He had 10 goals and 11 assists this season.
