Wisconsin State Playoff Preview: Division 2
The Wisconsin state playoffs began Tuesday with several quality programs in the hunt for the title.
The Favorite: Whitefish Bay
Moved down a level this season. The team will rely on their senior duo up top in [player_tooltip player_id="32823" first="Ben" last="Grimm"] and [player_tooltip player_id="18490" first="Mitchell" last="Dryden"]. Whitefish Bay had a first-round bye.
Top Contenders: Oregon, Wauwatosa East, Elkhorn
Oregon has gone unbeaten all year and cruised to their conference championship. Oregon has defeated the likes of Verona (away), Madison West, Baraboo, and Middleton this year. It's a similar story with Elkhorn, who only lost once all year. Sophomore Forward Ray Beilman has loads of potential with this team. Wauwatosa East has played arguably the toughest schedule all year and it is the top seed in its sectional. Wauwatosa East only lost 1-0 to Whitefish Bay this season. Other losses came against Marquette, Arrowhead, and Homestead.
Top Sleepers: Sauk Prairie, Nicolet
Like Wauwatosa East, Sauk Prairie played an extremely tough schedule. Seeded fifth in the same sectional as Oregon (who they lost 1-0 earlier), the team will rely on seniors Quinn Baier and Sam Drescher. Nicolet has a future star with Eli Nelson in net and recently played a thrilling 0-0 draw against Hamilton and lost 2-0 at Whitefish Bay earlier this season. Other young pieces and experience will lead an impressive group this postseason.
