Winter FAB 50: New No. 1s for boys and girls
In this article:
Well, that didn’t take long.
Within a week of the preseason rankings being released, both the boys and girls preseason No. 1 teams tied matches last week, and in the short term, those results cost them the No. 1 ranking.
In winter boys soccer, Servite (Calif.) moves to No. 1 following by Birmingham (Calif.). Servite is off to a 2-0 start. Last week’s top-ranked Montverde Academy (Fla.) tied an unranked opponent and fell to No. 18 this week. While that drop seems steep, the reality is it’s merely temporary as almost all of the teams in front of Montverde are in Texas 6A, NorCal or SoCal regions, meaning just about every one of them will have to lose at some point this season. Montverde Academy, which does not compete for a state title, is likely to inch its way back up the list in the ensuing weeks.
On the girls side, Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) was held to a draw by usually strong Oaks Christian (Calif.). The result has this double effect: Harvard-Westlake moving down in the Top 10 and Oaks Christian entering the rankings in the Top 25. With Harvard-Westlake dislodged from the top spot, the new No. 1 is Flower Mound (Texas), the defending Texas 6A champ and last year’s FAB 50 winter national champion. Prosper (Texas) checks in at No. 2. One thing is for sure, Nos. 1 and 2 will remain the same the next several weeks as neither Flower Mound nor Prosper play until after the New Year.
