Texas teams hold down the No. 1 spots in this week's FAB 50 rankings.
But a California surge is coming.
A surprise playoff loss by girls soccer power Bartram Trail (Fla.) allowed California teams -- Temecula Valley, Capistrano Valley, Harvard-Westlake, and Corona Santiago -- to slide up to the Nos. 2-5 positions, respectively. All four California teams are vying for the SoCal Division I title. Mountain View, Claremont, and Monte Vista all inched their way into the Top 10 giving California seven of the Top 10 spots as the winter season starts to wind down.
While California's boys dominance is not felt at the top of the rankings since Eastlake (Texas), Tampa Prep (Fla.), Tucson (Ariz.), Alief Elsik (Texas), and Grapevine (Texas) occupy the first five spots, a collective move up is pending. Servite (Calif.), at No. 7, heads a list of 10 California teams in the Top 20. There's a long way to go in the Texas season and it's not a given that Tampa Prep and Tucson can complete their perfect seasons. Look for the California teams, especially the SoCal squads, that can survive the playoff gauntlet to be rewarded in the rankings for their success.
