Winter FAB 50: California regional results shake up girls Top 25
In this article:
Champions were crowned in California and Hawaii last week, leaving only Texas still playing winter soccer.
But just because seasons are over in six states, that doesn’t mean those teams’ final ranking is finished. Over the next month, as Texas teams sort of ts ranking order through the playoff system, expect some upward movement for the teams already finished.
This past week, Oak Ridge (Calif.) girls pulled off a bit of a stunner, winning the NorCal Division I title to complete an undefeated season. Sure Oak Ridge was the No. 1 seed, but this was still a team without a marquee national result this year and was coming off a losing campaign in an abbreviated 2019-2020 season, not to mention it made early-round postseason exits in previous regional appearances. That all changed last week with Oak Ridge taking out Mountain View (Calif.), a team that was ranked among the Top 5, and completing the playoff run with a shootout victory over Buchanan (Calif.). Oak Ridge vaults from the 40s to No. 12 this week.
Redondo Union (Calif.) girls also made a major leap in the rankings following its SoCal Division II title. This SoCal power is now No. 13.
Temecula Valley (Calif.) girls, meanwhile, stay very much in the national title hunt following its victory over San Marcos for the SoCal Division I crown. Temecula Valley, currently No. 2 in the FAB 50, finished 24-1-1, which included the team avenging its only loss with a Southern Section final victory over Corona Santiago (Calif.). Temecula Valley then added three more quality wins in the SoCal Division I tournament. In fact, Temecula Valley’s final five games this season were all wins over teams currently in the FAB 50.
The girls ranking saw quite a bit of re-ordering as several of the favored California teams lost early than expected in the regional tournament. The results allow a lot of Texas teams to line up high in the rankings, awaiting their turn at knocking each other out.
Prosper (Texas) remains No. 1 in the girls rankings. Tampa Prep (Fla.) and Grapevine (Texas) stay 1-2 in the boys rankings, but Servite (Calif.) moves up to No. 3.
