The 2008 Academy team plays through the thirds on the pitch, is aggressive in the final third, and likes to press high. They recently were promoted from Gold to Premier and will be an NPL team next year. The 2006 Academy team plays similarly and is very consistent at their level.
The common thread is that all three teams are very talented, and feature very good players. Here are a few.
Marcelo Cruz, Winger, 2006 Academy
Cruz recently joined SF Glens and has a great feel for the game, shows great vision, and the ability to fit through tight spaces. He can get the ball forward, can take on defenders 1v1, and play the ball forward. He is a true winger.
West Freau, Striker/Winger, 2008 Academy
Freau is an attacking player, whether it is as a No. 9 or on the outside. He has the ability to run at guys, to distribute, and bring other players into the play, and he is a great finisher.
Charles Gonsolin, 2008 MLS
Gonsolin, who moved from France at age 9, recently got cleared to join the club and has made a big impact. He is good on the ball, shows great balance, and can get between players. He has a fantastic shot and has been asked to join the upcoming Regional MLS ID camp in San Jose.
Sammy Long, Central Defender, 2008 MLS
Long is a very composed player in the back. He is a very long, lanky player but has great balance as he is in control of his body. He is a very focused player and is very versatile, and can play all over. He breaks up play well and distributes the ball well.
Ryan O’Carroll, Striker/Midfielder, 2006 Academy
O’Carroll can move around and play the No. 9 or No. 6. He’s tenacious, works hard, and shows great movement and action. As a striker, he distributes to the wingers and outside backs very well and as a midfielder, he distributes well and can help vary up play.
Rowan Sellers, Holding Midfielder, Striker, 2008 MLS
Selles is versatile enough to play at the No. 6 spot or the No. 9. He has a good build and is athletic with great technique. He almost never loses the ball and because of that can take risks as a striker. In the midfield, he dictates the flow of the game, he is creative, efficient, and can play multiple styles. Like Gonsolin, he will be at the MLS ID event in San Jose.
Devin Stuppin, Holding Midfielder, 2008 Academy
Stupin is a very good athlete and is a four-star tennis recruit. Because of his athleticism, he is a very good soccer player as well. He breaks up play in the midfield, can distribute well, and has good technique in finding different ways to pick a pass.
Asa Wendler, Central Defender, 2008 Academy
Wendler has developed a lot over the last year and has really stood out, becoming captain material. He is what you look for in a center back as he is a lockdown defender, consistently shutting down attackers with great ability. He has a good presence, uses his body well, and can play the ball out of the back.
