Triad was applying pressure early and often. Freshman Kiera Mullarkey created some strong chances to start things off. She played a great through-ball to start a counter attack. After that, she had several chances on net. Kinlee Lippert and Gina Catanzaro also had nice starts. Fenwick GK Audrey Henrichs made some great plays early with several saves too. But despite all the early chances, it was Fenwick who scored first. Sophomore Grace Kapsch capitalizes off a corner by Emily Ortiz Emily Ortiz D IL . Ortiz displayed excellent skills as an outside back all game.
Fenwick led 1-0 at halftime. The counter-attack gave them the corner kick opportunity to score and the defense was extraordinary. Triad Winger Gina Catanzaro stole the show early in the second half. She showed some great skills with the ball and would out-dribble numerous defenders at a time. She can be very dangerous in space too. Catanzaro had her best opportunity with about 20 minutes left in the game, with a goal from the right side to tie it. The game would remain scoreless for the rest of regulation. Keepers Reagan Chicas (Triad) and Audrey Henrichs (Fenwick) made some excellent saves down the stretch. Henrichs made a great diving save in the final minutes.
In the 93rd minute Kinlee Lippert finally broke the tie from 25 yards out. Freshman Emma Correale would finish things off in the final minutes to secure a 3-1 win. Maddie Hunt and Ezra Wilder assisted the OT goals. Gina Catanzaro, Kinlee Lippert, and Audrey Henrichs had terrific games today.
Benet 3, Deerfield 2
Benet started hot right away. Forward Katie Lewellyan scored scored exactly one minute into the game off a breakaway. She was all over the field up top in the opening minutes. She made terrific runs and showed great ball control and awareness. While the Redwings controlled the game early, Deerfield was able to tie things up in the 16th minute. Holly Deutsch played Emily Fox to tie things up. This was Deerfield’s confidence booster. Emily Fox scored off a beautiful shot with two minutes left in the first half. Deerfield led 2-1 at half.
Benet would not fold. Senior star Marian Pinto started to make some plays and create scoring chances for her team. Like early in the first half, they put a lot of pressure on Deerfield. They finally tied it midway through the second half when Anna Casmere scored off an assist into the box to tie things. With eight minutes left, Pinto stole the ball from a warrior player, and played Casmere on the run. From there, she fired a shot over the keeper into the back of the net. Benet would hold on for a 3-2 comeback win.
Deerfield played without Riley Schimanski, who was sidelined with a leg injury.
