Whitefish Bay is coming off a thrilling 2-1 sectional championship win over Brookfield Central. The defending champs are looking to repeat as D2 champions. Juniors Lucia Englund Lucia Englund M WI and Sofia Englund are the offensive leaders. The twins have combined for 39 goals and 21 assists this season. Junior GK Riley Franklin Riley Franklin GK Whitefish Bay | 2023 WI has a 0.6 GAA this season. She’s been the leader of the Lady Duke defense. Meanwhile, Sauk Prairie cruised past its first two opponents this postseason. In the sectionals, Sauk Prairie picked up 3-1 victories over DeForest and River Falls. Senior F Katelyn Fishnick leads the way up top. She has 20 goals and 11 assists in 15 games this season. Junior Alexis Klemm is another offensive piece with 13 assists and 13 goals on the year. Sophomore Alexis Atkinson and freshman McKenna Breunig have 15 and 14 goals apiece.
Both teams have talent and a strong resume, but I expect Whitefish Bay to take care of business. THE PICK: Whitefish Bay 3, Sauk Prairie 1
No. 2 Oregon vs No. 3 Cedarburg: Thursday 1:30 p.m.
Oregon has advanced to its seventh straight state championship. Oregon is 20-0-1 and has one draw on the year against Verona. Its defense didn’t concede a goal until May 6, outscoring opponents 68-0 during that span. Oregon has been scored on only three times all season. Senior Zoey Pagels leads a well-rounded team with talent all over the field. Cedarburg is led by 30-goal scorer sophomore Mary Stoebel. The Bulldogs are 14-6-2 on the year but have played close games against very tough teams. They tied Whitefish Bay 1-1 back on May 3. Despite the difficult schedule, I think Oregon is just simply better than the other team here. THE PICK: Oregon 5, Cedarburg 0
Championship Pick
OREGON 2, WHITEFISH BAY 1: Oregon’s toughest test will come in the state championship. I truly expect Whitefish Bay to give them a battle. But I think Oregon should come away on top.
