Continue ReadingDespite neither team reaching the Hawaii state final last year, the Preseason All-Metro Boys team is dominated by players from Kalani and Punahou as those two teams have the rosters to reach the state final and perhaps even win the crown.
Kalani is the dominant force in the public school world, while Punahou dominates the private school side of things in Honolulu, but four other schools are represented on this preseason team.
FORWARDS: Declan Horio is a No. 11 who can use either foot and can do it all. He’s a great dribbler, he is able to beat people and score or whip in crosses in the box. He led the Interscholastic League of Honolulu last year with 10 goals. Keaton Hicks plays opposite Horio at Punahou, playing the No. 7 spot and he is an absolute go-getter. His engine does not stop, he works hard and really just loves to score as that is his first instinct. He’s fun to watch, he loves to play and is a guy who can make something out of nothing. Logan Zaa is a hard-working forward who scores goals by constantly looking to make something happen with his creativity and taking on defenders.
MIDFIELDERS: Ethan Senter Ethan Senter M #98 Nation HI is the standout player at this position as the UC Santa Barbara commit showed off his prowess with four goals in a game last year against Castle, showing what a force he can be. He is in the West Region Olympic Development Program. Danny Jackson is a new name on the scene in the ILH as he returns home to Honolulu after spending a couple of years in Seattle where he played with the Sounders Youth Academy. He is an intelligent player who directs play through his precise ball movement. He is a maestro in the middle and is a very good and encouraging leader. Kelly Takara started as a keeper but quickly grew into a big presence in the middle of the pitch where he can also push up and play forward when his team needs goals. He has a great touch and can score with his head or his feet.
DEFENDERS: The Fuse brothers at Kalani, Jenson and Shane, are a solid pair who lead a back line that only allowed 13 goals in 15 matches last season. They are steady and organized and understand the game. Parker Patterson is a defender that has good speed so he can track forward and run with them, but is also very strong and tough on tackles. He’s a smart player who reads the game well. Cade Quinto is an outside defender who can move in and play centrally as well. He is coming off an ACL injury and should be ready shortly after the season starts, if not sooner, and is great at cleaning up any sort of mess in the back.
KEEPER: Tanner Shum was forced into action as a sophomore for Iolani and quickly established himself as the best keeper in the ILH. he is a commanding presence, does not let the pressure affect him as he plays with confidence and shows great ability to make reads and stop shots.
