The preseason hype for Plainfield North was surely for real. The team returned 10 starters and earned the No. 3 seed in its sectional. The squad even took down fellow state powers in Sandburg and Naperville Central. But Plainfield North couldn’t get the job done against Oswego after beating them 1-0 earlier this season. Oswego would fall to Wheaton-Warrenville South in the regional championship game.
York poised to repeat as 3A champs
The Dukes are fresh off another regional championship and remain unbeaten. York ousted Hoffman estates in the second round and beat Glenbard North 1-0 in the regional championship. The Dukes’ next opponent is Addison Trail: a team that shocked everyone by upsetting West Chicago and St. Charles North last week. Midfield standout Jose Herrera has 30 points this season to lead the Dukes. Sophomore keeper Diego Ochoa has also impressed with a 0.57 GAA and four saves against Glenbard North.
Naperville Central has lots of depth
Four different players scored last week for the Redhawks. Senior Josh Wiegel scored the lone goal against Yorkville in their opening match. Three others scored in the regional final against Plainfield East. Keepers Austin Waite Austin Waite GK Naperville Central | 2023 IL and Dylan Scott combined for two shutouts last week. Freshman Chase Adams continues to impress in the middle of the field and will be a dangerous piece for years to come.
Look out for Lane Tech
The Indians have been a CPS power for decades, but it’s been hard to find postseason success in recent years. They pulled off two big wins last week in regional play. They first took down CCL power Loyola 2-1 in a double-overtime thriller. Enrique Alvarado found the back of the net with just 40 seconds left in the second OT. On Saturday, they took down regional host Evanston 2-0 with Henry Winston and Colin DuRoss scoring. Andres Murdock and Gael Rodriguez combined to allow just one goal and make 13 total saves. They’ll next face Oak Park.
Rockford Boylan continues to surge
The Titans cruised to yet another regional championship last weekend. They first defeated Burlington Central 2-0. Over the weekend, they cruised past NIC-10 rival Belvidere 7-0 to win the regional championship. Senior Victor Ibarra continues to shine with sophomore Reese Schlicting also impressing. Boylan will face Marmion at the Glenbard South sectional on Tuesday.
Senn upsets Fenwick
Senn surprised lots of people when it upset Fenwick in the 2A regional final. Junior Callum Dickson had a goal and an assist in that game to help secure the upset. The Bulldogs have had an impressive 17 goal scorers on the season with Hanad Ade leading the way with 11. They’ll continue their Cinderella run against Notre Dame on Tuesday night.
