The area boasts two of the top programs in Northern California, in Berkeley High and Bishop O’Dowd High, as well as undiscovered gems from Piedmont, a town within the city of Oakland, as well as players from the Oakland Athletic League.
This list of the Best XI from the Oakland Area will shed some light on the top boys players in the Oakland Metro area.
FORWARDS: A lot of interesting names and athletes in the Oakland Area playing forward, including several who are coming into their junior seasons that could be big time recruits because of their athleticism. But let’s start with a senior, Christian Martinez, who plays at Castlemont in the OAL. Martinez was the OAL player of the year as he scored nine goals for the Knights. Alan Rubio Partido is another senior, and he plays at Berkeley High and was honorable mention All-WACC which says about him as a player because the position was deep in this league last year. He had three goals and eight assists last year for a very deep Yellowjackets frontline. Tomas Caminos of Bishop O’Dowd, only a junior, was second team All-WACC, very high praise considering he was just a sophomore and scored 11 goals and had six assists.
MIDFIELDERS: Oliver Gill is a big midfielder for Berkeley, he was honorable mention All-WACC as a sophomore and even contributed with two goals and four assists. Caleb Garza of Alameda and TJ O’Neil of Piedmont are both returning seniors who were first-team All-WACC a year ago. Garza is a midfielder with a nose for goal and O’Neil can do it all. Flynn Balog is a returning senior for Bishop O’Dowd and was honorable mention a year ago.
DEFENDERS: Teammates Marlow Buettner and Emmett Tjen represent Berkeley in a back three on this list of the Best XI. Buettner, the junior, was second-team All-WACC and had three goals and two assists from the backline. Tjen, a senior, was also second-team all-league. Matt Hoseman of Bishop O’Dowd is a senior that was voted first-team All-WACC.
KEEPER: Daniel Malecki, a senior from Piedmont High, allowed just 10 goals in 21 games for the Highlanders last year and kept 14 clean sheets, including including 10 in a row on the run up to a North Coast Section Division IV title.
