Affectionately considered the bright side of the Bay, Oakland and the towns that touch it such as Berkeley, Piedmont and San Leandro, offer a lot of talent with a senior heavy class that makes up the 2022 All-Metro Girls team.
FORWARDS: Myah Polzin headlines this group. She last appeared for Berkeley High in the 2020 shortened season as a freshman, scoring nearly 20 goals. She is returning from an ACL injury this season and after she proves she is healthy should be recruited very heavily. She is a big, strong, fearless goal-scorer. Angie St. Denis plays the No. 11 and really shows her skills at that left wing position. She is incredibly fast, taking players on 1v1. She is very clever and relentless. She was first-team All-WACC last season. Ivon Escuen plays in the Oakland Athletic League at Castlemont and is a creative and skilled player with a nose for goal.
MIDFIELDERS: Shima Dixon Shima Dixon F CA is the crown jewel of the midfield position in the Oakland area. Dixon plays at Berkeley High and is committed to UC San Diego. She is tenacious, resilient and a gamer. She was first-team All-WACC last season. Audrey Lam Audrey Lam M Piedmont (CA) | 2023 #100 Nation CA is a very technical and crafty midfielder who was also first team All-WACC while Michelle Matta of Skyline in the OAL is very strong in the air and can hit a real rocket shot.
DEFENDERS: Alexandra Diaz of San Leandro was first-team All-WACC last year as a junior and is a passionate player who is very physical and consistently wins balls in the air. Sabine Lahey-Teare, of Oakland’s Bishop O’Dowd High, was a second team All-WACC player and is technical and tenacious. Fellow second teamer Ruby Hill, who is a Bates College commit, is a hard-working, technical defenders who is strong in the air while Sabine Meggyesy was honorable mention as a junior and is one of the strongest and hardest working defenders in the area.
KEEPER: Cantrell is the only junior on the list, and should have several colleges knocking on her door. She was a second-team All-WACC player as a sophomore a year ago, and has the size you look for in a keeper. She is also strong and fearless to go along with her ability to stop shots and close down angles, as well as come out for balls in the air off corners and free kicks.
