With most Teams in starting their respective conference play on January 24th Preseason/ non conference games/ scrimmages and tournaments have already been well underway. With the last tournament and preseason games coming to a close, previously strong ranking DFW teams such as Southlake, Grapevine, and Flower mound have well re-established their dominant play, and are looking ahead for another great season and playoff run.
Starting off strong with fairly easy preseason matches a recent game between Flower mound and Bryon Nelson high school JV 1 showed the influence that the younger talent that Flower mound has access to in case of injury on the varsity level, or if needed to pull up to for playoffs to add depth to the roster. Flower mound JV 1 dominated Bryon Nelson JV 1 in a 3-0 victory. Flower mound collectively attacked, and defended as a team, shifted the ball from both right to left sides of the field, and was able to quickly counter and press the field with all three attackers, this proved to be more than effective than Bryon Nelson.
Although Flower mound’s offense was very strong and pressed well together, and were able to put away 3 goals, the key part of the 3-0 victory started defensively. With Flower mound’s defense making key tackles, and building out of the back this allowed their forwards and midfielders to be more offensively focused and creative on the ball to create chances to go forward. Jessica Olivieri (sophomore) (Renegades GA club player) a left-footed center back for Flower mound was a dynamic force in the back. Her quick decision making, strong tackles from both on the ground and in the air helped secure a clean sheet defensively. Keeping Bryon Nelson’s forwards frustrated and without any real shots or threats to goal. Not only was her defensive play impressive she also was an offensive threat as well. She has a great left footed long ball that allowed her to break through the lines of Bryon Nelson and help her team transition to quick counter attacks. Her ability to serve threatening long balls to the forwards also transitioned into an assist from a free kick starting off the first of the three goals that were scored.
Flower mound JV1 played an impressive game and secured another victory to conclude their preseason. With young talented freshman and sophomores showcasing their skills and attributes on the field hoping to be pulled to the varsity squad when playoffs come around. As their season is starting to unfold their collective team play and individual player development looks to keep improving players such as Jessica Olivieri is a player to be on the look out for on the varsity squad as play offs approach.
