Katy Taylor Mustangs
The Katy Taylor Mustangs from Katy are part of UIL Division 6A – Region 3, District 19. The program has made it to the State Tournament once, back in 2019-2020, and has been having some good seasons as of late, having made back-to-back playoff appearances in the last two seasons. With a strong senior core set to depart, the Mustangs are looking for another solid campaign this season.
Players to Watch
Leo Caromano
Leo Caromano
A long and athletic goalkeeper, Caromano gives his team a lot of confidence between the posts. He’s very safe with his actions, rarely dropping second balls in his saves, and uses his athleticism to make stops. Caromano also does very well when he needs to step outside the posts and collect crosses inside the penalty box. Very vocal, he’s one of the team’s leaders and communicates very well from the back.
Josiah Norton
Josiah Norton
The Mustangs’ captain plays a big role for the team on the left side of their backline. He play somewhat of a hybrid center back/left back role and is very good at shutting down opponents. Norton is a very physical player and he uses these attributes really well to stop plays, but also has good pace and positioning to track more mobile forwards on the flanks and higher up in the field. He’s very good in the air too and is solid in possession.
Alexandro Zubia
Alexandro Zubia
Zubia plays next to Norton in Taylor’s backline and is just as reliable as his teammate. Also a football player for the Mustangs, he’s a very physical player and uses his strength to overpower opponents and his pace to chase them we needed. Zubia plays hard on defense and makes some really good tackles. He’s also solid on the ball and often connects good passes from the back.
Gabriel Obando
Gabriel Obando
Obando is Taylor’s engine on the field as he covers a lot of ground in the middle and is very involved with the game on both sides of the ball. He does some solid defensive work, winning balls back in the middle and helping shield the backline, but is also very efficient on the offensive side of the game. Obando is very accurate with his passes and also make some runs off the ball into the penalty box to finish plays.
Angel Ahumada
Angel Ahumada
Ahumada is probably Taylor’s most important offensive player. An attacking midfielder, he’s got great quality on the ball and likes to accelerate the game with his accurate passes. Ahumada makes good decisions when in possession and has very good vision in his ball distribution. He finishes well from distance and uses his body well to shield opponents and create space.
