I’ve attended several matches in the Houston area over the last few months, from pre-season tournaments to the playoffs, in order to provide the best coverage possible for Prep Soccer and compiled a list with several players that I got to see once or multiple times who left a very strong impression about their games.
Now, with the season concluded, it’s time we reveal their names, starting with the female goalkeepers:
Molly Thompson Molly Thompson GK TX
Molly Thompson Molly Thompson GK TX
Thompson played between the posts for a strong Ridge Point team that played in the Championship game, falling to eventual champions Lewisville Marcus. She had a major role with her team the entire season, allowing only four goals during district play. Thompson plays with great confidence and that’s for good reason as she has excellent positioning in goal and strong reflexes to reach when caught off guard. Very competitive, she was also one of the main leaders of the Panthers throughout the season.
Rich completed a stellar high school career with Seven Lakes, registering 75 matches, 60 shutouts and 18 goals conceded – she also scored herself from a free kick in her senior season. These numbers are a strong statement of her abilities and reflect the level of confidence the Spartans had in their shot-stopper. Rich is a tall goalkeeper, standing at 5’10”, but also impressed with her agility and quickness to react between the posts. She very rarely makes bad decisions, is great at collecting crosses and play very well with her feet too.
Highlights
Elise Bienvenu
Elise Bienvenu
Bienvenu was the starting goalkeeper of a strong Bridgeland team that dominated district play with only two goals allowed. A sophomore, she stepped up to the starting role and handled the task pretty well over the course of the season, delivering solid performances. Bienvenu is always very calm and technical with her actions, dealing well with long distance shots and also displaying quick decision-making to react to unexpected situations inside the penalty box. The goalkeeper is also very reliable in the air, handling crosses well.
Leah Kappler
Leah Kappler
I watched Kappler in action early in the season, during the I-10 Shootout, and she left a really strong impression against a strong Bridgeland team. Lake Highlands ended up losing in the penalty kick shootout, but held Bridgeland’s strong offense to only one goal with an excellent display from their goalkeeper. Kappler impressed with her reflexes and made a handful of point-blank saves that not many other goalkeepers would have managed to do. She also did well when she had to step out of her position between the posts, quickly sprinting forward and shutting down opposing attackers.
Madelyn Mech
Madelyn Mech
A goalkeeper that plays with tremendous intensity, Mech led Jordan’s backline from her position between the posts. Consistency is something every coach expects from a goalkeeper and she delivers just that, frequently coming up big for her team – she made it to the All-District 1st Team. Mech is very safe when dealing with long distance shots because she times her movement very well and gets closer to the spot with quick steps before diving to catch the ball. She’s very strong in 1v1 situations too and does a good job when dealing with crosses.
Esther Quintanilla
Esther Quintanilla
I watched Quintanilla in action once, during the I-10 Shootout, and was really impressed with everything she showed. It’s not rare to see freshmen with great potential who immediately break into their team’s staring lineup, but not many are as ready to do it as she was. Quintanilla has all the tools to succeed, having excellent size, impressive agility, quality with her feet and a very calm demeanor on the field. She uses her skills very well and will only get better with time.
