The four best teams in each division gave everything they had in order to secure the state title and we’ll take a good look at what happened in the State Tournament by highlighting the players that rose to the occasion and delivered stellar performances on the biggest moment of the season.
The Division 5A Girls final was the first to begin on Saturday and had the Grapevine Mustangs securing their first state title with a 1-0 victory over the Frisco Raccons.
These were the most impressive players in the division:
Grapevine’s dynamic forward was the MVP of the State Tournament and it couldn’t be any different after she scored all of the team’s three goals in Georgetown, including the game-winning in the Championship game. Very quick, skilled and unpredictable, McCullough was a nightmare for defenders who tried to stop her, beating them more often than not and progressing toward the goal. She was also very efficient with her finishes, firing ten shots across two matches and sending seven of them on target.

Lumpkin earned back-to-back State Championship All-Tournament Team selections for good reason as she played a big role as an outside back for the Mustangs. The defender was one of just three players to remain on the field for all 180 minutes in Georgetown and displayed a strong two-way game, helping shut down opponents on defense while also contributing on offense. Her long throw-ins often created problems to opposing defenders and she also fired two shots (both on target) in the Championship game against Frisco.
One of the top goalkeepers in the entire state, Cerone came up big for Grapevine in Georgetown, giving the team great defensive stability between the posts. She split goalkeeping duties with fellow senior Addison Williams Addison Williams GK TX and didn’t let a single shot in during the 100 minutes in which she was between the posts for the Mustangs. Cerone, who earned an All-Tournament Team selection for her strong play, registered three saves in the Championship game, helping Grapevine deal with Frisco’s pressure.
‘Lexi’ Lee was Frisco’s offensive star in the State Tournament and helped her team advance to the Championship game with a strong performance against hosts Georgetown in the semifinals. The talented forward was very direct with her attacking plays and consistently created chances, getting five shots (all on target) and scoring the game-winning goal. Lee had more difficulties against Grapevine’s solid defense in the Championship game and only managed to finish once. She was also included in the All-Tournament team.
Sabrina Taber
Sabrina Taber
Taber was the only player to beat Grapevine’s defense in Georgetown, scoring Smithson Valley’s lone goal against the champions in their semifinal match, which ended 2-1 for the Mustangs. She played mostly on the right of Smithson Valley’s frontline and was dangerous when beating defenders off the dribble and with her pace, getting four shots in that match. Taber also made it to the All-Tournament Team.
