I’ve attended several matches in the Houston area over the last few months, from pre-season tournaments to the playoffs, in order to provide the best coverage possible for Prep Soccer and compiled a list with several players that I got to see once or multiple times who left a very strong impression about their games.
Now, with the season concluded, it’s time we reveal their names and today we’ll look into the center backs that stood out:
Jacob Robisch
Jacob Robisch
Robisch played a big role on the backline for Tompkins, starting 16 matches during the season, the most for any defensive player in the squad. A center back with good size and physical tools, he was important when the team was put under pressure in the final third, getting several clearances in the air and with his feet. Robisch proved to be a complete defender, though, anticipating plays and doing well when he needed to step up and chase attackers away from the penalty box. His possession game wasn’t very elaborate, but the defender connected the vast majority of his passes and made very few mistakes with the ball.
Javier Mestre
Javier Mestre
A state champion with Seven Lakes, Mestre couldn’t play in the State Tournament due to injury, but played a pivotal role with the Spartans over the course of the season. He was one of the team’s most-used center backs, providing great stability and consistency to the team. Mestre is very complete as a defender as, although very strong in the air, he’s also very mobile, which allowed him to defend well in different systems and deliver what the team needed when looking to get the ball back. Mestre, who was also a threat on offensive set pieces in the air, is also a very sound passer, who initiated great plays from the back.
Josiah Norton
Josiah Norton
Norton played more on the left of Katy Taylor’s backline and did a good job going against forwards of different profiles. He’s very strong physically and does well when defending strikers with less mobility, but can also use his athleticism and physical tools to chase more dynamic wingers deeper in the field or on the flanks. Norton is very good in 1v1 duels and also in the air, typically allowing very little space for attackers to beat him. He also has good quality on the ball and would often push forward from the left and help the team create chances.
Leonardo Marquez
Leonardo Marquez
Cypress Springs’ captain during the season, Marquez played a big leadership role with the team from his center back position. Very active and vocal, he would always be in touch with his teammates, instructing them and making adjustments. Marquez was also very important when playing defense, of course, using his size to protect the penalty box, but also displaying good mobility to get into duels deeper in the field or in the wings. A very good passer, he could play on midfield too in order to make more of an impact on the game when his team needed to score.
Sam Sager
Sam Sager
Cy-Woods’ left-footed center back Sager displayed excellent defensive instincts, protecting the left side of the team’s three-man backline. Very mobile, he went hard for tackles and did a very good of winning the ball back for his team in the most varied areas of the field. Sager also played an important role for his team in possession, pushing forward from the left and initiating offensive plays. He also displayed great quality with the ball, connecting long passes and taking free kicks and penalty kicks for his team.

Elgstrom played in the heart of Cinco Ranch’s backline and his defensive solidness was one of the reasons why the Cougars made a strong playoff push this season. Not many defenders manage to combine his physicality with excellent mobility and quality on the and because of that, he was very involved with everything his team did on the field. He protects the team’s penalty box extremely well with his size and is very difficult to beat in the air, but also thrives when dealing with more dynamic, quicker attackers. Elgstrom is also very good in possession and his team utilized his passing ability very well, having him push forward from the backline and operate as more of a midfielder when Cinco Ranch was in possession.
Alexander Mutalibov
Alexander Mutalibov
Mutalibov’s intensity and high energy were among his most remarkable traits with his Tomball team. He’s the kind of defender that spares no effort when trying to win the ball back and will do whatever it takes to clear the ball from the penalty box. Also very solid on the ball, the center back used his passing to help the team build out of the back and often hit some interesting long balls. Mutalibov was also one of Tomball’s leaders on the field, keeping his teammates energized and giving them instructions frequently.
