I’ve attended several matches in the Houston area over the last few months, from pre-season tournaments to the playoffs, in order to provide the best coverage possible for Prep Soccer and compiled a list with several players that I got to see once or multiple times who left a very strong impression about their games.
Now, with the season concluded, it’s time we reveal their names and these were some midfielders who had a major influence on their teams:
Aidan Morrison
Aidan Morrison
Morrison was one of the most cerebral players in his Seven Lakes team that claimed the state title. Very technical and intelligent, he was the centerpiece of the team’s offense, creating good chances with his passing ability and always finding teammates in good spots. His movement off the ball was excellent, as he always found good pockets of space to get on the ball, from where he could make plays. Morrison is also very quick in his mind, often making one-touch plays and finding solutions no one else on the field thought of. The midfielder was also very strong in set pieces and converted some penalty kicks in big moments for the Spartans during the playoffs.
Jose Ramos
Jose Ramos
Ramos was the only player to start all 22 matches for Tompkins during the season and also led the Falcons in goals (12) and assists (six). A very dynamic offensive player, he was deadly when getting on the ball on the left to make plays. Ramos was very dangerous with his solo runs, but also did very well when combining with his teammates and could create for himself or for them. Very skilled on the ball, the had the ability to be a difference-maker for his team and also proved to be a very good finisher, getting on the penalty box to shoot and getting the ball on target from set pieces.
Tobias Herrera V
Tobias Herrera V
Herrera was the heart and soul in the midfield of his George Ranch team. The team captain, he played with tremendous intensity, covering a lot of ground and working hard on both sides of the ball. His offensive game was very complete as Herrera can be dangerous with his passing, but is also excellent at beating opponents off the dribble and finishing chances. Very strong in set pieces, he did it all for the Longhorns and scored goals in some clutch moments of the season, showing his importance for the team.
Nathan LeFleur
Nathan LeFleur
LeFleur thrived in his box-to-box role with Cy-Woods during the season. Playing with a lot of intensity and determination, he not only had good performances himself, but also helped his teammates play at their best, creating the conditions for them to thrive with his hard work. LeFleur had an important defensive role with the Wildcats, using his energy and strong play to regain possession in the middle. Once he had the ball, the midfielder would ignite offense himself, either dribbling through the middle or passing it to a teammate. LeFleur has an interesting ability to finish from distance and was never shy of attempting to score with it.
Marcelo Ojeda
Marcelo Ojeda
Midfield was easily the strongest area of Jordan in the last season and Ojeda’s play had a lot to do with it. He had great connections with teammates Juancarlos Santos Juancarlos Santos M TX and Ryan Armijo Ryan Armijo M TX and, playing in a little bit of a more advanced role, also made a big impact on offense. Very skilled on the ball and intelligent, Ojeda was great at finding and creating spaces to explore, be it by making runs with the ball or feeding it to a teammate. A very good passer and a strong finish, he was a threat in the final third and scored some important goals for the Warriors. Ojeda also did some solid work on defense, tracking back and helping his team occupy the space.
Victor Hernandez
Victor Hernandez
Hernandez played a central role with Dobie from his midfield position. He was involved with everything his team did on the field, helping shield the Longhorns’ backline, but also putting his stamp on the team’s offensive play. With his great vision, Hernandez made very good decisions in possession and had the skills to find great passes or to push the ball forward himself – he was always very good at understanding when it was time to push the tempo or to build up slowly. The District’s Most Valuable Player, Hernandez had a tremendous offensive impact with Dobie, ending the season with 23 goals and 14 assists.
