Continue ReadingThe National rankings for PrepSoccer were released early this month. The national rankings highlighted the amount of talent in the Pacific Northwest from this class. With the number of players in the national rankings from the region, there was a renewed focus on scouting for Washington and a fresh look at some of the prospects.
The recent scouting efforts revealed a number of players who should’ve been considered for national ranking as well as dozens that deserved the spotlight from the state-level. Below is a scouting report on some of the new players to the Washington 2025 rankings, which were updated on Thursday.
Hope is a center midfielder – box-to-box type with some qualities for a defensive midfielder. She stood out from game film in how she was always adjusting her body to open up to the field before receiving the ball. A lot of Hope’s success on the ECNL field comes from the work she does off the ball as she is constantly make small adjustments to either change the passing angle for a teammate or move her position so she can make a better pass once she receives the ball. The subtle quality of her game does not jump off the screen in highlights on even game film. It takes a while to notice, but her soccer smarts are there to suggest she has a future at the next level.
Mayne is a defensive center midfielder for her club team. She has a future there or at outside back. She is excellent at man-marking – and part of that is the style of play for her club team as she seems tasked with taking out the attacking midfielder. She can take a player out of the game with how she will hound the opposition. I will be following her career as I’m interested to see if a positional switch could be in line for her at the next level. Her defensive quality and 1v1 duel is elite.
Shih is such an enigma to me. She has moments when she looks like the best player in this class in Washington, but she also can drift out of the game for long stretches. She plays as an attacking midfielder for Pac NW 06 ECNL. There was a moment during a spring game when she dribbled through four defenders inside of the 18-yard box before finished the chance past the goalkeeper. If Shih becomes a more consistent threat from that role, she will be the top under-the-radar recruit from this class. The potential is that high when you have a player with that type of confidence, skill, and swagger.
Highlights
Miller is a center forward from Washington Premier 06 ECNL. She is listed as a forward/midfielder on her player profile, but I’ve only seen her as a center forward. She has a lot of qualities to be a top recruit from this class. She is a smart player and makes good runs off the ball. She is selfish (I mean this is in the best way) with chances – this is what you want from a center forward. Miller has a couple aspects of her game that could still develop – her hold-up play and improving as an aerial target – but there is more than enough potential here to make her a top prospect from the state.
Highlights
Chase is an underrated prospect that is going to surprise a number of people at the next level – some rankings have identified her as a national prospect, but she is not on the PrepSoccer rankings yet (She will be in the near future). She is playing with the WPSL right now – as well as with the Spokane Sounders in the Girls Academy. Chase is a defensive midfielder or a center back – and she could be a star in either role for the next level. I think her player profile lends more to a center back for a top program. The elite skill she brings to the game is her aerial ability. She is the best player I’ve seen from the state in using her head – and scoring goals with her head. She is a weapon on every set piece and corner kick. Her athleticism and competitive drive cover up some weaknesses in her game at the club level – her first touch needs to improve if she stays as a defensive midfielder. She is a terrific tackler in the open field and her athleticism really shines when she is battling for the ball – elite lateral quickness for a player in this class.
Highlights
Van More is one of those prospects who could really take her game to another level in a short amount of time. She is already a massive talent from the center forward position in this class. She has the frame and instincts to be a top player in that role. She has the technical ability to be a key link for the right system. She could improve on her aggressiveness and her finishing ability over the summer – a small step up in either would put her into the conversation among the top national recruits for the position and a jump in both aspects would firmly put her into the conversation of top recruits at any position.
An attacking midfielder for Spokane Sounders, Wanner is a decorated recruit this season as she was Offensive MVP for her high school league and part of the Girls Academy Talent ID for the Pacific Northwest. Wanner is an elite scorer for her position. She can finish from either foot within 20-yards of goal. She is right-footed, but her left foot is pretty good too. She has the pace and power to run through defenders, but often uses her skill and smarts to work around defenders. Her toughness really stands out as she does not back down from a challenge.
Highlights
An attacking midfielder with some elements of her game reminiscent of Summer Yates. Fearless on the dribble, Badillo is a constant threat when in possession of the ball. She is a skillful dribbler who wants to break ankles on the field. She can create for herself or for her teammates. She offers that special element in the final third that can break a game open.
Center back. Right footed. Could play either center back role. Very good on the ball. Calm in possession. Excellent passer. Good vision. Has the physical frame to handle the challenges of the division I level. Would like to see her be more aggressive defensively – gives too much respect and space to forwards when she could rely on her physical traits and strength to boss players off the ball. Potential is there for an All-Conference type of talent at the college level.
