I was able to watch them play multiple games recently, at ECNL VA and at the playoffs. Like the Pipeline team we covered in Part III, the RU 07 Boys are very well organized and have loads of talented players.
Luis Sanchez
Luis Sanchez
We will start with one of the captains, Luis Sanchez. Sanchez is a composed defender that reads the game very well. He is a strong player and uses that to move opposing players off of their intended run. Luis is a very good tackler/ball-winner. He excels in his decision making, and in his soccer IQ – Luis is constantly communicating instructions to teammates about gaps he sees, making sure the team is keeping it’s shape defensively.
If you were to describe the other captain, Devin Cooper Devin Cooper F VA , in one word, it would be “tidy.” Devin is a box to box mid that seems to always be in the right place defensively, and always make the right decision with the ball. He rarely gets beat by an opposing player. Cooper is a hard-nosed player, and is always around the ball. Just when you start to think that Devin could be a little more dynamic offensively, you will watch him take the ball and carry it 40 yards through defenders, with great pace. Once he does, he will either intelligently draw a foul, make a great pass in the final third, or finish the play himself. Cooper is also very good at delivering corners and free kicks for his squad.
Andrew Richman
Andrew Richman
Andrew Richman is a strong holding mid. He is a tough player in the middle of the field that covers a lot of ground, allowing the other midfielders to join the attack. Richman is a great ball-winner with a very good understanding of when he needs to quickly move the ball forward because the counter is on, and when to play it safer and keep the ball. Richman and Cooper control the midfield very well for RU, winning their side the possession battle most games.
Nicholas “Nico” Zeballos Nicholas “Nico” Zeballos M VA is one of the attackers for this RU team. Nico has great size at 6’2″. He excels at dropping into the space between the opposing midfield and back line to find the ball. Once he receives there, he shows the vision and passing skill of a #10. Nico can also run at defenders and beat them 1v1. Zeballos is also good at finishing plays when he stays up top, or on set pieces.
Highlights
Nicholaos Sarantakos Nicholaos Sarantakos F VA is another goal-scorer for this team. The versatile forward is great with his back to goal, with various quick turn moves to go to in order to get his shot off. He also drifts wide to find space and is effective finding teammates from there. Not to get too far off topic, Sarantakos excels at simply getting the ball in the back of the net. He and Zeballos form a dangerous attacking duo that is a handful for opposing back lines.
Reid Campbell
Reid Campbell
Reid Campbell is an attack-minded midfielder with tons of pace and quick feet. Campbell is a hard worker that looks to penetrate the opposing defense as soon as he gets possession. He often uses his pace and dribbling skill to beat defenders. Reid also has great vision, he is able to scan the field to find the best option after he escapes pressure.
The 2007 Richmond United team went to Greensboro as the #5 overall team in the U16 rankings. Unfortunately, they fell just short of a trip to CA, losing in the round of 16. Wonderful season for these boys. Congrats!
