Champions were crowned in each division and several players stood out with excellent performances throughout the week while Prep Soccer watched the action very closely.
I was in attendance during the first weekend of play and watched as many Round of 32 matches as I could, picking several players to highlight. With the tournament now over, we’re running that list down, and this week we’ll look at U-16s. These center backs made their teams very difficult to score at:
Dunham captained Atlanta United to win the division title and anchored the team’s defense alongside fellow center back Kaiden Moore. The first thing in his game that caught my eye was his ability to play on the right side of the defense as a left-footed center – although this might look trivial, it can be quite tricky. Even if he had the physical tools to be dominant in the air, Dunham’s offensive game is built upon his intelligence and reading of the game as he would get first to the ball more often than he would outmuscle an opponent for it. The defender was also very smart and efficient with his distribution, displaying great calm on the ball and confidence in his passing.
Adi Zanovic
Adi Zanovic
A very tall central defender, Zanovic uses his frame extremely well to stop plays and avoid close-range finishes towards Oakwood SC’s goal. He’s very strong in the air, but also impressively mobile, doing a very good job when required to step outside the penalty box to track a striker or cover an outside back. When I watched him play, his team was under heavy pressure and Zanovic responded well, helping they clear crosses from the penalty box and blocking some finishing attempts. He was able to maintain his focus and intensity level at all times, displaying excellent composure and focus.
Owen Hornig
Owen Hornig
Hornig was a key piece in the backline of his Strikers FC team that advanced all the way to Championship match. He’s very big and physical and uses his strong body very well to win plays and dominate in the air. Players of Hornig’s profile tend to struggle when playing in offensive-minded teams as they get on the ball a lot and have to defend in transition, but that wasn’t the case with him against Oakwood SC. The center back not only showed he could play a big role in the team’s buildup with his efficient passing, but also dominated opponents when they had a lot of space to make plays.
Jonas Gebriel
Jonas Gebriel
Gebriel displayed a very complete game in his two matches with Chula Vista FC. He’s a tall and physical defender, who knows how to use his body and athleticism to make defensive plays, but who also has good pace and positioning to recover when he has to operate away from the penalty box. His passing range was also very impressive as Gebriel was always very calm on the ball and managed to hit some precise and interesting long diagonals from the back.
A new addition to FC Dallas this season, ‘Kaka’ Scabin immediately caused a massive impact on the team’s backline. As a defender, he combines good athleticism, excellent positioning and quality on the ball, being also able to play as an outside back. Scabin is very good in 1v1 duels as he does a very good job of pushing opponents away from the penalty box and timing his tackles extremely well. He’s also very calm on the ball and helps the team initiate offensive plays with his intelligent passing.
