21. Furman
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #46 Sam Sery (Charlotte FC), #102 Ryan Wagner (Sporting KC)
Sam Sery was a massive land for the Furman 2024 class. The Charlotte FC defender has a path to a significant role with the team early on. He has been playing with the Charlotte FC second team, Crown Legacy FC, this summer. The versatile player could feature in a number of roles, but right back seems to be his position for the future. However, the versatility to play almost anywhere in the backline could earn him immediate playing time with Furman. Ryan Wagner is the right center back for the Sporting KC U17 MLS Next team last season. He wore the captain’s armband for that squad. The defender-heavy group so far should be the key pieces to a stellar class in 2024 for Furman.
22. Denver
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #88 Chris Haynes (Real Colorado), #132 Riker Doolittle (Solar), William King (Crew SC), Grant Lund (Real Colorado), Ian Shuler (NTH Nasa)
Jamie Franks and his staff did a terrific job so far with this class. Denver pulled in top local talent CJ Haynes, an uber-competitive player from Real Colorado. Haynes is our top ranked prospect in this class. Club teammate Grant Lund is also among the players bound for Denver – and could end up being the best of this bunch. Lund was part of the MLS Next All-Star game over the summer. The right center back is an excellent defender and a very good passer. There is a blueprint there for Franks and his staff to develop the next star from the Denver program.
23. California
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #137 Eli Wachs Eli Wachs M State #136 Nation CA (De Anza Force), #143 Malcolm Zalayet Malcolm Zalayet F #142 Nation CA (Marin FC), Joseph Chalwin Joseph Chalwin M CA (Ballistic United)
Leonard Griffin’s profile on the Cal website starts with “A talented recruiter”. Those words are definitely ringing true as he heads into year two on the job in Berkeley. The head coach of the Cal program brought in a number of new players for this season. He is changing the look of the team and the program quickly. The 2024 class is shaping up to be another standout group. Griffin is bringing some of the top players from the region. Wachs and Zalayet are standouts in a our national rankings. Joseph Chalwin Joseph Chalwin M CA is a top performer from Ballistic United who has professional aspirations. He is a defensive midfielder on the rise and one to watch in the near future.
24. Wisconsin
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #94 Connor Gage (Madison 56ers), Dean Boltz (Sockers), Matthew Zachemski (Sockers)
Connor Gage leads the charge in this class. Gage was the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a junior. The stats are impressive but the timeliness of his goals also matters. The forward scored the game-winner in the state championship. Even when everyone on the field knows he is going to get the ball, Gage still finds a way to deliver. He is a player, and it will be hard to keep him off the field for long.
25. Cornell
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #100 Nathanial Hovan Nathanial Hovan F Warwick | 2024 State #99 Nation PA (PA Classics), Eddie Stewart (St. Louis City SC), Justin Melly (Arlington SA), Campbell Reece (Atlanta United), Bennett Wehibe Bennett Wehibe D State PA (PA Classics), Ryan Zellefrow (Portland Timbers)
Nathanial Hovan Nathanial Hovan F Warwick | 2024 State #99 Nation PA is the top ranked recruiting for the Cornell 2024 class. The strength of this group is in the numbers though. This is a deep group with balance at positions. Ryan Zellefrow might be the one to watch this season. He has been playing (and scoring) for Timbers 2 recently. He is originally from Pennsylvania but spent the past two seasons with Timbers Academy.
26. Kentucky
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #129 Jabari Rasheed (Louisville City SC), #145 Christopher Rogers (Crew SC), Bains Smith (Atlanta United)
Jabari Rasheed is the rapid riser in this group. The defender made his debut with Louisville City SC over the summer. The USL Championship side has taken pride in the success of the academy and given opportunities for young players to compete with the first team. Rasheed’s experience at that level should make his transition to the college level easier. He is a tough-tackling center back. He has the athleticism to step into the lineup immediately for Kentucky.
27. Rutgers
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #134 Eddie Krupski Eddie Krupski null | F Seton Hall Prep (NJ) | 2024 State #133 Nation NJ (PDA), #141 Dylan Carlson Dylan Carlson D Saint John Vianney | 2024 State #140 Nation NJ (PDA)
It’s a small class so far for Rutgers, but they landed two of the top prospects from powerhouse club PDA. Krupski has been a prolific scorer at the club and high school level. A no-nonsense type of forward, Krupski does not waste touches. The center forward is great at creating space – either with his runs off the ball or with his strength – and then punishing the defense once he has a small opening.
28. Villanova
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #121 Lorenzo Avalos Lorenzo Avalos null | D Salinas | 2024 State #121 Nation CA (San Jose Earthquakes), William Spitznagle (FC United), Cameron Tolson (Pipeline SC)
Avalos is the top prospect in this class according to our rankings. He plays as a center back for San Jose Earthquakes academy. Comfortable on the ball, confident in the tackle, and pace to cover across the backline, Avalos has the tools to shine in that role. Spitznagle is also a center back but has a completely different player profile. The FC United star has the height to win any aerial duel. He is a good passer and does well in quickly surveying his options when he is on the ball. An Avalos-Spitznagle partnership could the recipe for success in the future for Villanova.
29. Stanford
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #113 Devon DeCorte (Philadelphia Union), #146 Alexander Chow Alexander Chow M #145 Nation CA (San Jose Earthquakes), Eric Frintu (Crossfire Premier)
Devon DeCorte has some special qualities to his game. He is a midfielder with a good first touch and the unique ability to punish the opposition with his finishing from anywhere inside of 30 yards. The Stanford midfield looks to be crowded for 2024, but DeCorte might be too good to hold off for long. Chow is a player on the rise. He was really impressive with the San Jose Earthquakes during the MLS Next Cup. He plays as a more defensive or box-to-box midfielder.
30. SMU
Verbal commits (as of August 22): #71 Mason Grimm (FC Dallas), Oliver Knotek Oliver Knotek F CA (Steel United)
Mason Grimm is the local player to watch from this group. He plays as a center back for FC Dallas. He’s been a mainstay with the academy for a few years. He has a well-rounded game and is an ideal fit for the playing style at SMU. Grimm put together quite the highlight reel playing for the club’s U19 team last season. Oliver Knotek is a bit of off-the-radar prospect. The attacker from Southern California is one to watch from this class. He could be a star in the future. SMU has found some gems in Southern California recently.
