Prep Soccer Texas covered the first two days of the event, following several teams from the Lone Star State as they took the field against opponents from other states and provided daily coverage with photos and a report on the individual standouts of the day.
Now with the event over, we’ll take a little bit of a deeper dive and feature the positional standouts in the 17s division, and now it’s time to mention the center backs:
Angel Mercado
Angel Mercado
Even though SAFC lost all three matches in Round Rock, Mercado did a solid job on defense for them. The team’s captain, the right-sided center back displayed great understanding of the game, knowing when to drop back and cover his teammates or to step forward and put pressure on opposing attackers. Mercado was effective with his interceptions and played with good energy defensively, winning duels and protecting the penalty box with good efficiency. The defender also did a good job in possession, remaining calm when on the ball and hitting good passes out of the back.

Ryan Lowe Ryan Lowe F TX
Lowe played a big role in DKSC’s backline and helped the team earn three wins in the event while conceding just two goals. The towering center back anchored the team’s backline and created the conditions for their offensive-minded outside backs to push forward and join the offense. Very tall and physical, Lowe was dominant in the air, but also showed good footwork to defend outside the penalty box, using his body in the battle for space and to cut lanes. The center back also displayed good quality on the ball, actively participating in the team’s buildup.
Grove was extremely reliable at center back for HTX as the team had two wins and one loss, with just two goals allowed. A six-footer, he used his frame well to make stops, winning physical plays and controlling the space with authority. The center back also displayed great aerial ability on both penalty boxes, clearing crosses on defense and getting dangerous headers on offense. Grove also did a good job when in possession, displaying great calm on the ball and solid decision-making, connecting good passes and even progressing the ball with some quick runs through the middle.

Ian Vuong Ian Vuong M TX
Vuong was a key piece in his Albion Hurricanes FC team, playing center back for them and helping them get two wins and a loss, with three goals conceded. Paired with Lorenzo Juarez Lorenzo Juarez M TX , he protected the team’s penalty box well, playing with great consistency and efficiency. Vuong proved to be pretty resourceful when playing defense as he used his size to dominate in the air and win physical duels, but also displayed great mobility to defend in transition and chase attackers well outside the penalty box. The center back made some key defensive actions, blocking what could have been dangerous shots from close range with sliding moves.
Zamora and his Dallas Texans team had a successful weekend in Round Rock, returning home with two wins and a tie and just three goals conceded. One of the team’s captains, he played a major leadership role for them, constantly instructing his teammates and keeping the team on alert. Zamora played as a right-sided center back and was very solid defensively, standing out with his positioning and his firmness to win duels. The defender was also very confident in his ability to hit long passes and helped create some chances by connecting good diagonals and linking up with the team’s striker up top.
Pola Miggally
Pola Miggally
Playing next to Zamora, Miggally was another defensive standout with the Dallas Texans. Playing on the left side of the team’s defense, he displayed an interesting ability to read the game and make interceptions while also doing a good job in 1v1 duels. Miggally also proved to be an excellent fit with the team’s possession-heavy style, connecting good short and long passes from the backline. A left-footed player, he was extremely offensive-minded when his team had possession, moving to the flank almost as a left back and helping widen the field.
Aidan Battelle
Aidan Battelle
Battelle helped Solar SC have one of the strongest defenses in the division as, despite having one win, one tie and one loss, they only allowed two goals in the event. He played as a left-sided center back and had a solid partnership with Abdourrahman Jirani Abdourrahman Jirani D TX , bringing a lot of physicality while his partner handled the buildup. Battelle was dominant in the air and displayed good mobility to cover space and keep opponents under pressure. He did a very good of avoiding fouling near the penalty box while defending quicker and smaller attackers.
