Prep Soccer Texas covered the first two days of the event, following several teams from the Lone Star State as they took the field against opponents from other states and provided daily coverage with photos and a report on the individual standouts of the day.
Now with the event over, we’ll take a little bit of a deeper dive and feature the positional standouts in the 17s division, and today our focus will be on the midfielders:
David Villareal
David Villareal
Villareal was a key piece in the midfield of the SAFC team that ended the weekend with three losses. A box-to-box midfielder, he covered a lot of ground for the team and was very active when they had possession. Villareal displayed great passing ability and vision, finding ways to get the ball to a teammate when under pressure and making intelligent shifts when he had more space. The midfielder also had great movement off the ball, constantly infiltrating in the opposing backline and underlapping, offering a passing outlet to the attackers.
Santiago Olmedo
Santiago Olmedo
Olmedo and his FC Dallas White team completed their schedule in Round Rock with one win and two losses. He played the defensive midfielder role extremely well, offering protection to the team’s backline and serving as the starting point for most of their offensive options. His defensive game was centered on his ability to read plays, make interceptions and cut passing lanes. In possession, Olmedo would at times drop in between the center backs to give the team a more reliable start to their buildup. He also did well when breaking pressure with fakes and body moves.
Jonathan Luna Sabando
Jonathan Luna Sabando
Luna Sabando was one of the main playmakers in his DKSC team that secured three wins in the event. He was very active in the final third, circulating everywhere to find the best spot to get on the ball and make plays. Luna Sabando displayed a very interesting game in the final third as he can use either foot to create problems with his dribbling and his passing and knows exactly when to use one or the other. He also finishes well from distance and is very precise with his set pieces.
Beau Bryant
Beau Bryant
With Bryant in midfield, Lonestar SC Black ended the event with one win and two losses. Playing as a defensive midfielder, he used his size well to control the space in front of the penalty box and was very strong in aerial duels, helping defend crosses and clear long passes. Bryant also displayed good vision and efficiency with his passing, helping the team circulate the ball with quality.
Zacharia Alsahli
Zacharia Alsahli
Alsahli was among the most creative players in his Solar SC team that had a win, a tie and a loss in Round Rock. Playing the No. 10 role, he was very involved offensively and made things happen with his smooth game in the final third. Alsahli did a good job with his movement off the ball, drifting to wider areas of the field and dropping back to get possession in spots where he could influence the game. He was extremely dangerous when operating around the penalty box because of his ability to dribble in tight spaces and to send through balls behind the backline.
Salvador Martinez
Salvador Martinez
An attacking midfielder for the Dallas Texans, Martinez helped his team go undefeated over the weekend, with two wins and one tie. He is very difficult to stop in 1v1 situations and disorganizes opposing defensive systems with his ability to beat opponents off the dribble, but also manages to create chances by combining with his teammates. Martinez does a very good of understanding the movement of his teammates and adjusting to it as his positioning in the final third was very fluid – he would at times play further up as a second forward and on other occasions get to wider positions to get on the ball. The midfielder was also very precise with his set pieces.
