Some of the most promising players of the Lone Star State were in action in Georgetown, playing big roles for their teams as they battled for the state title and we’ll take the next few days to recognize some of them who stood out with strong performances.
Division 4A Boys had the San Elizario Eagles reclaiming the title after five seasons with a 1-0 win over Boerne in the Championship Game to lift the trophy for a fourth time. They ended the season with 24 wins and three losses.
These are some of the players who showed a strong game in the division:
Francisco Marquez
Francisco Marquez
The junior midfielder came off the bench to be the hero of San Elizario’s title, scoring the game-winning goal in a tight Championship Game against Boerne. The Eagles were controlling possession but couldn’t find a way to send the ball into the back of the net until Marquez did it with a 25-yard shot that made of him the match’s MVP. After dealing with injuries during the season, he was used as a super sub in Georgetown and also made a good impact in the semifinals, against Navasota, improving the team’s offense.
Eduardo Marquez

If Francisco was instrumental in San Elizario’s victory in the Championship Game, Eduardo provided what they needed to beat Navasota in the semifinals. The senior forward was ice cold to covert a penalty kick in the 98th minute and keep the team in the hunt for the title. San Elizario vastly outshot their opponents on both matches in Georgetown and Marquez was one of the main reasons for it, firing six shots in each match.
Stephen Chairez
Stephen Chairez
It was a State Tournament of tight margins, with all three matches ending 1-0, and while being able to score was key for San Elizario, not conceding was equally as important. One of the team’s leaders, Chairez also played a big role in the team’s victory, keeping the ball away from the goal in 180 minutes of action in Georgetown. The senior goalkeeper was particularly important in the semifinals, against Navasota, when he made three saves.
Ben Niedeoken
Ben Niedeoken
If Boerne held a potent San Elizario team scoreless for over an hour, that’s because of Niedeoken. The junior goalkeeper was tested in a match in which his team was on the back foot the entire time and kept them in the game with save after save. Niedeoken left the field with seven saves to his name, including some impressive ones. He had less work to do in the semifinals, when he registered a single stop.
Juan Vargas
Juan Vargas
With low-scoring matches, the State Tournament was marked by excellent goalkeeping and Vargas was another one to stand out in Georgetown. The senior put on an excellent performance against San Elizario in the semifinals, taking the match to overtime with eight saves registered in 100 minutes of action. Vargas conceded the penalty kick that resulted in the game-winning goal and got a yellow card for it, not being able to try to make another stop in the play that decided the match.
