Some of the most promising players of the Lone Star State were in action in Georgetown, playing big roles for their teams as they battled for the state title and we’ll take the next few days to recognize some of them who stood out with strong performances.
Division 4A Girls was the first to know its champions, with the Celina Lady Bobcats taking the title for a third-straight season thanks to a 1-0 win over Boerne in the Championship Game, completing the season with 26 wins, one loss and two ties.
These are some of the players who showed a strong game in the division:
Grace Pritchard
Grace Pritchard
One of the team’s leading goalscorers during the season, Pritchard came up big for the Lady Bobcats in Georgetown. The forward had a solid performance in the semifinals, helping her team beat Lumberton 3-1 by providing an assist. The best was yet to come, though, as Pritchard was the difference-maker in the Championship Game, scoring the championship-winning goal with a header, one of her strengths, and taking home the MVP award. Pritchard’s energy and intensity on the wing were extremely important for the Lady Bobcats.
Sammy Quiroz
Sammy Quiroz
The outside back was huge for Celina during the season, registering over 40 contributions between goals and assists, and was also a key piece in their triumph in Georgetown. Quiroz was huge in the semifinals against Lumberton, scoring the first two goals of the match within three minutes and displaying great presence inside the penalty box. She didn’t find the back of the net in the final against Boerne, but made a critical defensive action early in the match, clearing a shot that was going into the net. Quiroz won her third soccer state title with Celina to go with two in cross country.
The senior goalkeeper ended her high school career with Celina with three titles and was a big part of the solid defensive system that helped the team lift the trophy again. After getting 22 clean sheets in 27 matches heading to Georgetown, Gustafson got another one in the Championship Game, giving her team the safety it needed to win by a small margin. She wasn’t on the field when Celina conceded against Lumberton in the semifinals and went 150 minutes without being scored in the State Tournament, with a pair of saves registered.
Kailey Stringfellow
Kailey Stringfellow
Stringfellow was the best player of Boerne in the State Tournament, having strong performances in both matches played by the Greyhounds in Georgetown. She was critical in their 2-1 semifinal victory over Salado, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime with a shot from 20 yards out and setting up that ended with the goal of junior Avery Ukeiley. Stringfellow was also very dangerous in the Championship Game against Celina, firing a team-high two shots on goal and seeing one of them be cleared off the line.
Hollywood had a strong performance with her team Salado in the semifinals against Boerne and kept them alive in the match. She scored the team’s only goal with a beautiful and difficult shot from the side of the penalty box that went right into the opposite upper corner and was very active with another two goalscoring attempts. Besides finishing her chances well, Hollywood also helped create opportunities for her teammates by operating around the penalty box.
