The Three Top Traits Every College Soccer Coach Wants to See

Every player hoping to play college soccer has wondered what it truly takes to get noticed. While technical skill and athletic ability are important, they're just the starting point. Coaches are evaluating what they see at showcases in the 45-90 minutes they are there or at camps, but they are looking beyond the pitch as well. They are looking close into character, academic performance, and how athletes represent themselves both on and off the field.

CHARACTER

As talented as some players are, a player's character is a big piece that coaches look into. They look closely at a player's character because it directly impacts the team culture, chemistry, and the long-term success. In a college environment, teammates spend countless hours together so trust, accountability, and a strong work ethic are non-negotiable for college programs. A talented player with a poor attitude can bring down the team environment, while a high-character sets the tone for others. Coaches want players who elevate the program, not just with their skills, but with how they carry themselves every day.

https://twitter.com/ImCollegeSoccer/status/1949800238023098374

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Academics matter just as much as athletic ability when it comes to playing college soccer. Your grades in high school matter and even more so in college. Whether it's NCAA, NAIA, or JUCO, every level has academic eligibility requirements that players must meet to compete. Coaches aren't just recruiting athletes - they're recruiting student-athletes. Poor grades can make a player ineligible or limit scholarship opportunities, no matter how talented they are on the field. Strong academics also show discipline, time management, and commitment which are all qualities coaches value highly in their programs.

ALWAYS WATCHING

The way you carry yourself, both on and off the field, speaks volumes to college coaches. They are not only looking at your performance during games but also how you respond to challenges and represent yourself online. At every level of college soccer, the most wanted players are those who bring more than just talent. They show strong character, take care of their academics, and act with maturity and purpose. If your goal is to play at the next level, focus on being a well-rounded athlete. Those players are who coaches want in their programs.

https://twitter.com/mlycan12/status/1937924977183105278
