The temperature around game time was a cool 55 degrees for a 7:00 pm match. The winter soccer season recently kicked off in Northern California, and two public high schools met for a conference match in their season openers.

Pioneer High School came into this match with a 3-2-1 record. Last season they had an overall 13-3-4 record, while going 5-1-4 in league play for a 3rd place finish. They had a really good run at the CCS (Central Coast Section) playoffs last season, as they took the eventual Division 1 champs (St. Francis) and eventual NorCal Division 1 champs to the limit in a 2nd overtime.

Piedmont Hills had a 4-1 record prior to this match, and they were looking to get their second league win in 2 seasons. Last season they went 7-7-6 overall and 1-7-2 in league play. The Pirates have a new head coach, and they are looking to get the program back on track.

Piedmont Hills opened up the scoring with their first goal in the 8th minute and got their second in the 28th. The Pirates led 2-0 at the half. Pioneer came out in the second half on fire; they converted back-to-back goals within a matter of a minute and a half to tie the match 2-2. Five minutes later, Piedmont Hills got the go-ahead goal, but a few minutes later, Pioneer leveled the match at 3-3. That was how the game ended, as both sides gave it all they had in this exciting non-stop scoring fest.

She was a key part of the offense. Sophia made quick and decisive passes as well as made stops on defense on both ends of the pitch. She's a box-to-box player who makes her presence felt when the ball is at her feet or when tracking players on defense. I've recently evaluated Sophia at the ECNL level. She had a great showing as she took on one of the best 2028 players in the nation on the top ranked MVLA team. The Cincinnati commit sets the standard for Pirates to follow.

She scored the opening goal of the match in the first 8 minutes of play. Her set-piece shot was taken slightly off the corner kick spot and it dipped perfectly out of the reach of the goalkeeper. The slicing kick swerved into the back netting for a spectacular go-ahead goal. Maliah also made multiple runs on goal and applied pressure up top. Her ability to find soft spots in the defense also gave her an advantage in taking quality shots on goal. Maliah also scored goal #3 for Piedmont. She will possibly end up as the Pirates leading scorer this season.

Jaslene scored the Pirate's second goal around the 28th minute mark. She received a pass from the right wing, just inside of the 18. She then cut to her left and sent the ball past the goalkeeper with a left footed banger. Her ability to make strong runs into the penalty area caused havoc on the Pioneer defense. She had multiple shots on goal that either went wide or slightly over the top. She has some speed to get by defenders and has the strength to take shots from range.

She was a key part of the Pirates defense. Megan made some critical stops throughout the match. Her ability to track down players and make clean tackles is what made her stand out. She uses speed and timing to disrupt the attack. I've previously seen her play as a forward in middle school competition and it would be great to see her take on more of a role in offense. She's one of a few freshmen starters in the A-Division and definitely a player scouts will be looking at.

She made plays on both ends of the field. Despite a USYNT tryout hours before the match, Addison showed up for her team and got her team on the board as she scored the first of the Pioneer's three goals on the day. She received the ball at the top of the 18 and sliced her way past two defenders before sending to the far left corner. Her poise and control are evident in her technical skills. I've previously evaluated her on the ECNL level as well as last season as a freshman starter. Her ability to manage the ball under pressure and anticipate the attack are key parts that stood out. It was great to see her in the attacking midfield position as she helped spark the Mustangs' offense. She is definitely a player who will be getting a bunch of calls on June 15th.

She scored the 2nd goal for Pioneer. Her set piece shot from 40 yards out was placed just below the crossbar and over the reach of the goalkeeper. Perfectly placed with a cool, calm, and collected approach. Isabella was also active up top as she made diagonal runs and provided quick combo passes. She is a calculative player who can find players in open pockets and cut-off runs along the channels.
