Last weekend was a busy one in the Texas High School soccer scene, with multiple tournaments taking place across the state as teams prepare for the start of district play.

Arguably the biggest of them, the I-10 Shootout was held in Katy, a Houston suburb, reuniting 72 girls' varsity teams from different parts of the state in its 20th edition, which ran from Thursday to Saturday in ten high school campuses and two Katy ISD stadiums. Prep Soccer Texas attended the tournament, covering six matches in the first two days of the event and getting to watch as many as 12 participating teams in four different brackets.

We were able to watch some impressive performances across the two days and are now taking the week to list the players who seem poised to make a big impact in their teams as the high school season enters its most important stage. The outside backs are up next:

Friday played for the Atascocita team that dominated the Cougar Bracket. A left back, she was part of the flawless backline that registered clean sheets in all three matches, contributing to their success with her steady and reliable game. Friday was very strong and efficient defensively in their first-round 3-0 win over Friendswood, showing great spatial awareness and defensive instincts to shut opponents down out wide. The junior also demonstrated good quality on the ball, taking great care of it to support the team's buildup and engage in combination plays in the attacking half.

Junek was with the A&M Consolidated side that finished second in the Warrior Bracket. I got to watch them in a 1-1 first-round tie with Lake Travis that followed with a victory in PKs, in which she was extremely consistent and reliable. A left back, Junek had a primarily defensive role in that match and was extremely solid, remaining disciplined to guard her spot while she intercepted long passes and defended her zone in 1v1 duels. The junior didn't get to push forward very often, but created a dangerous attacking play when she did, sending a great cross into the box.

Court and her Lake Travis team were in action in the event's Warrior Bracket. She played left back in their first match in the tournament, a 1-1 tie with A&M Consolidated that ended with the Lady Cavaliers going down after a PK shootout. A sophomore, Court stood out for her defensive intelligence, tucking in to support the center backs defend the penalty box when she had to and doing a good job in 1v1 duels out wide too. The left back also showed great decision-making in possession, making the right choices both when building out of the back and when supporting the offense in the attacking half.

Lasida was part of the Tompkins team that triumphed in the Falcon Bracket. I watched their first match in the tournament, a 6-0 win over O'Connor, and it was easy to see why she's already one of the most important players on the team while being a freshman. With her team controlling the match from the first whistle, Lasida was able to show her offensive skills, providing support to the team's offense from the right back spot. She's very technical and also very intelligent with her decision-making, consistently picking the best options in the attacking half. Lasida spent some time playing as a right midfielder too, and demonstrated an interesting ability to make diagonal runs into the box, having nice goalscoring opportunities with a left-footed shot and a header.

Schulte was with the Cypress Ranch team that was in action in the Spartan Bracket. Her game stood out in a 3-3 tie with Fort Bend Austin in the Consolation Bracket, in which she was one of the best players on the field. A left back, the sophomore is very technical and smart in possession, connecting with her teammates and quickly moving upfield to get the ball back. She showed good offensive versatility, staying wide to cross the ball from the end line and coming inside to operate as a playmaker, and did very well at crashing into the box to get on the end of crosses, scoring the team's first goal in a play like this. Despite not being very physical, Schulte also held her own defensively, anticipating plays and being very tough in 1v1 duels.

Jones was part of the Ridge Point team that appeared in the Warrior Bracket. I got to watch her in a 2-0 defeat to Lamar in the Consolation Bracket, and saw some interesting tools in her game. Jones is a tall outside back and uses her body very well to win defensive duels and her long legs to cover ground and get into the attacking field in no time. Jones is very safe in possession, is smart with her passing distribution and brings some versatility to the table, being capable of playing on both outside back spots and keeping her high level.

Brendel appeared for the Stratford team that ranked second in the Spartan Bracket. A freshman, she earned a starting spot in a strong team and held her won against an elite-level opponent when the Spartans defeated Seven Lakes 2-1 in a second-round match. Playing as a left back, Brendel was very reliable defensively, dominating her zone with firm and well-timed defensive options. She didn't push forward very often, but had an important role in the team's buildup, helping them move the ball with her efficient and reliable passing.
