Five Defenders to Know From the Updated Texas 2028 Girls Rankings

<p>After some months, the Prep Soccer 2028 Texas Girls State Ranking was updated earlier this week, with new players being added to the prestigious list that features only the best of the best in the Lone Star State and the existing ones having their positions adjusted.</p>   <p>The ranking will continue to be consistently updated so it accurately reflects the progress achieved by players over time and presents a clear picture of the Texas landscape, always having in mind each prospect's potential to make an impact at the next level.</p>   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li><strong><a href="https://prepsoccer.com/texas/rankings/girls/2028-rankings/">Texas 2028 Girls State Rankings</a></strong></li> </ul>   <p>The updated Texas 2028 Girls State Rankings now feature 155 players from every corner of the Lone Star State, and we're taking the week to present you with some of the most intriguing names that made the list.</p>   <p>These are some of the best defenders in the state:</p>    <p class="text-gray-700">Kates is the second-highest-ranked defender in the Rankings and climbed all the way up to fifth place overall. She leads the backline for [program_tooltip program_id='283243' first='Albion' last='Hurricanes FC'] G10 in the ECNL League and Friendswood at the high school level. Kates had an incredible rise in the last few months, having made it to the USYNT and establishing herself among the best center backs in the country. She's really tough in duels, playing hard and making quick actions to dispossess opponents. Despite not being very tall, Kates is very strong in the air and has a great presence in both penalty boxes, doing a good job of delivering defensive clearances and scoring off headers in set pieces. She's part of the [program_tooltip program_id='283648' first='FC' last='Dallas'] G10 team that competes in the ECNL League and features for Prosper at the high school level. She's raising a lot of attention at the international level, having been called up for camps with the US, Mexico and Puerto Rico this year. Capable of playing in central defense or as outside back, Fregoso has an interesting athletic profile, being tall enough to dominate the penalty box and mobile enough to succeed when defending in space. Her game is very steady and consistent and provides great stability to her team's defensive system. She recently switched clubs, joining [program_tooltip program_id='333974' first='Atletico' last='Dallas'] U17 in the Girls Academy League, and is a high school state champion with Celina. Leddy is a versatile defender who can play on both outside back spots and will contribute on both sides of the ball. Defense is probably the highlight of her game, as she is very good at covering her zone, using well-timed tackles to dispossess opponents and her superior mobility to chase them down in space. She plays club soccer for [program_tooltip program_id='283317' first='[program_tooltip program_id='280767' first='DKSC' last='']' last=''] G10 in the ECNL League and represents Rockwall at the high school level. Wilson can be used in central defense or right in front of it at the defensive midfielder role and will perform consistently in either, using her solid defensive instincts and interesting physical tools to challenge opponents and keep them away from the penalty box. The defender is also well-versed on the ball, contributing to the team's buildup, and can be a weapon in set pieces, appearing in the attacking penalty box to score off headers.</p>   <p><strong><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DPZ1w-PEXAV/">Highlights</a></strong></p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Korndorffer was selected for the Class of 2028 watchlist. She represents [program_tooltip program_id='342634' first='FC' last='Westlake'] G09 in the ECNL Regional League and plays for Cedar Park during the high school season, having helped them win the state title in 2025. Korndorffer can play in central defense or as outside back and thrives by using her body to win duels and dominate opponents, while also doing a good job when she has to defend in the air.
