Standout Boys Defenders in the DMV

Some of the best youth academies come out of the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, also known as the DMV. These academies not only challenge for silverware, but they produce some of the nations top talent. We have seen teams like [program_tooltip program_id='279937' first='DC' last='United'] and Pipeline compete for national prominence. Defenders are usually the guys who are keeping lean sheets and driving their team's to playoff finals. The 8 standout defenders are the type to have an impact at the next level.    Mikel is a central defender for the [program_tooltip program_id='279937' first='DC' last='United'] MLS academy. He is one of the best young center backs coming out of the DMV area. He has the blend of athleticism, technique, and the desire to defend. The former midfielder uses his technique to break lines of pressure with his passing and the ball at his feet. He is extremely comfortable in possession, much like a lot of modern professional center backs. Where he stands out is his ability to defend top attackers in 1v1 situations. He has great top speed and agility to match strikers or wingers in difficult defending situations. He has already been on some European trials and we can expect big things from Mikel.     Judah is a left sided center back for the [program_tooltip program_id='279937' first='DC' last='United'] MLS Academy. He is a tall aggressive defender who can step into midfield to quickly close down space and time. He is also dominant in the air. He uses his 6'4" frame and his leaping ability to attack aerial balls both in attack and in defense. Judah is an asset with the ball at his feet. He can play long diagonal passes to the opposite winger and is calm under pressure. He plays as a center back but he is versatile enough to play any position across the backline. He has fantastic speed and can recognize dangerous situations. This makes him an excellent defender of space in behind. He can carry the ball on the dribble and has a good range of passing. His soccer IQ carries into attacking set pieces and Miller anticipates crosses and second chance opportunities. He will be fun to watch at Georgetown in 2027     Thomas is a central defender for Baltimore Armor. He really knows how to defend and has the physical attributes to play the game for a long time. He is composed with the ball at his feet and has the touch to play the correct weight of pass to midfielders mid run. He also can play longer driven balls with ease. Where Thomas stands out is his ability to make tough situations look very easy or almost routine. He sniffs out danger with the proper clearance or can play it back to his goalkeeper to release pressure. Thomas will make a name for himself at the University of Virginia.     Kaden is a defender for the [program_tooltip program_id='283449' first='Richmond' last='United'] ECNL team. He primarily plays as a central defender but he can play anywhere across the back line and even into midfield. He is very good in possession of the ball and can play his way out of almost any situation. He is a good 1v1 defender and has the speed to make recovery runs behind the back four. He has been selected for the ECNL Selection game and is an accomplished futsal player. He is tall and has very soft feet. He is a former midfielder and has the passing ability to prove it. He can break lines in different ways and can cut out of danger with a lot of players around him. He is a good penalty box defender who commits to blocking shots and crosses. He plays the game like every clean sheet for his team matters. He is a hidden talent in the DMV.     Pascal is a central defender for the [program_tooltip program_id='283602' first='Achilles' last='FC'] MLS Next Academy team. He is a tall defender who moves really well and can pass with both feet. He can step in to midfield and play almost like a second 6 at times. His size is a massive asset. Standing at 6'5" he can find his way on to a lot of college rosters. Pascal has the ability to dominate attackers in 1v1 situations and as he grows in maturity he will only get better and better in that category.     Qasim is a left back for Baltimore Armor MLS Next Academy. He is a young rising star for the Baltimore club. He is a tall athletic player who can defend 1v1 and is equally as good at going forward to join the attack. He quietly does his job defensively and prevents goals from coming down his side. In the attack, he has 4 goals and 8 assists so far this season. He has been on trial at a few MLS academies and it looks like he will end up playing for Charlotte FC next season.
