The class of 2029 in the Eastern and Western regions of North Carolina gave us some interesting defensive players to look at. The players playing for [program_tooltip program_id='280390' first='Highland' last='FC'] are from Western NC, and the ones playing for [program_tooltip program_id='283526' first='Wilmington' last='Hammerheads'] represent Eastern NC.

Goalkeepers

Ellis is a tall goalkeeper whose greatest attribute is her awareness. She keeps her eye on the ball whenever she goes to attack it. This is most noticeable when she's saving shots from distance. But she also shows it when she has to defend crosses, coming out to parry them away.

Lily is a goalkeeper with great potential who instills confidence in her defenders. She is fast, both physically and mentally. Whenever she needs to make a split-second save, she'll respond to it with phenomenal reflexes. If she needs to run off her line or adjust her position quickly, she'll do so effectively. She doesn't go to ground "for the cameras" or when she doesn't need to. If she makes a so-called "save for the cameras", she'll do so because it is what the shot called for instead of showboating her talent. When she parries the ball, she tries to keep it close to her body when possible. If it's not possible, she'll parry it away from danger. She has a great understanding of the game.

Defenders

Abigail is a well-rounded full back who can play on either side. Offensively, she provides great crosses for her attackers. Because of her crossing ability, she tends to be on set piece duty. Defensively, she is strong and intelligent. She knows how to use her body to cleanly muscle opposition off the ball. She also has great positional awareness, rarely getting caught flat-footed.

Stella is a center-back talent with immense potential in the future. She is already taller than most of her peers, with room to grow even more. On the pitch, she uses this physical asset to her advantage constantly. She wins duels, both on the ground and aerially, remarkably easily. Her intelligence and awareness of the match is spectacular as well. She'll rarely rely on tackles because she anticipates plays early. Getting ahead of her opponent is no issue for her not only because she's intelligent and has long legs, but also because she's quick. She'll also rarely need to go full speed, but when she does, she gives the attacker a lot to work against. On the ball, her passing is great. She picks out the correct pass to help her team progress effectively from the back.
