Two SoCal Prospects Making Their Case for the Next Level

KS SPORTS NETWORK | PROSPECT WATCH

October 17–18, 2026 | MLS NEXT

Southern California's Next Wave of Talent

In my opinion, Southern California is one of the absolute best regions in the country to recruit young soccer players. I've been following this landscape for a long time, and at this point, I feel confident in my ability to recognize prospects who have the tools to reach the next level.

This past weekend, two players continued to strengthen their cases as prospects worth monitoring: Diego Pleitez of [program_tooltip program_id='283762' first='Ventura' last='County Fusion'] U15 and Danny Diaz of TFA U17.

Both are in different stages of development, but I believe each has the potential to create significant opportunities for himself.

Diego Pleitez | [program_tooltip program_id='283762' first='Ventura' last='County Fusion'] U15

Diego Pleitez continues to establish himself as one of the top prospects within the [program_tooltip program_id='283762' first='Ventura' last='County Fusion'] player pool.

This past weekend, Pleitez recorded a brace on the road against Albion LA, adding to what has become an impressive stretch of consistent performances.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DeqDE_GJxkn/?xtok=MWFhcjcxYWhibmFlYw==

He's a technically gifted player who has already generated interest through U.S. Youth National Team ID Centers, as well as the El Salvador national team.

As things stand, I view Pleitez as a solid Division I prospect with potential upside to reach the professional level.

VC Fusion hasn't necessarily experienced the greatest domestic success within the MLS NEXT landscape in recent years, but there's a saying that good players get identified regardless of their environment.

I believe Pleitez has the tools to make that happen.

He's someone I'll be keeping a serious eye on at MLS NEXT Fest, especially considering how much development he still has ahead of him before reaching the collegiate level.

Danny Diaz | TFA U17

Coming into this weekend, Danny Diaz was one of the top players on my radar.

People familiar with the TFA organization have shared their belief that Diaz might currently be the most valuable player within the club's entire player pool.

I can understand why.

Diaz has a certain factor to his game. He's aggressive offensively, isn't afraid to shoot, and has the ability to take over matches through his attacking production.

He found the back of the net yet again this weekend, further strengthening my confidence in his potential.

His technical ability, attacking instincts, and willingness to influence games are qualities that I believe could attract serious interest from professional academy programs.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dephub-hZ5j/?dlrf=ajFkdjZpdTZwbjN3

My crystal ball prediction is that Danny Diaz will be on the radar for a potential move to an MLS club's academy following this season.

TFA has a strong track record of developing players who eventually move into professional club academy environments. What's particularly encouraging is that the organization actively supports and positions its players to pursue those opportunities.

With major MLS NEXT events approaching, Diaz has an opportunity to put himself in front of the right people.

If you don't know his name now, I'm confident there's a good chance you will by the end of the season.

Final Thoughts

One thing I've learned from covering youth soccer is that talent doesn't always come from the most successful teams or the biggest academies.

Southern California is filled with players capable of reaching the next level, and sometimes the most interesting prospects are the ones who haven't received widespread recognition yet.

For Pleitez, I see a young player with legitimate Division I potential and professional upside. For Diaz, I see an attacking prospect who could be approaching an important opportunity to advance into an MLS club's academy system.

Neither path is guaranteed, but both players have shown enough for me to feel confident putting their names on the radar.

The best part of scouting isn't recognizing players once everyone knows their names. It's identifying them before everyone else does.
