<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Girls Academy 2023-2024 season kicked off this past weekend, with matches going on all over the country and some of the best teams in the nation getting on the field to play for the first point in their campaign.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There were several matches going on in Texas as well and Prep Soccer made it to the South Campus, in the Houston area, to follow the opening match between Rise SC G07 and the Borussia Dortmund International Academy North Texas G07 on Saturday - here's a <a href="https://prepsoccer.com/2023/09/ga-texas-rise-sc-g07-vs-bvb-ia-ntx-g07-photo-gallery/">photo gallery</a> for the encounter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Rise SC G07 2 - 0 BVB IA NTX G07</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>With the two playing competitively for the first time in the season, Rise made good use of the home-field advantage and took control from the start, getting the first goal within the first few minutes, with forward Brenna Medina making a run behind BVB's backline and calmly finishing the chance. Arianna Espana came off the bench and added Rise's intensity in the middle, helping the team maintain control of the game. Her pace and her movement off the ball were excellent and created a lot of problems for her opponents, who struggled to catch her. Besides being very fast, Medina also timed her runs in behind the backline very well, often going from the middle to empty spots on the flanks and very rarely being caught offside. She used her physical tools very well to dispossess opponents and protect the ball from them, making turns and quicks moves to make pressure. In possession, Ramos proved to be an extremely intelligent and versatile player, operating well in tight spaces and also taking advantage when she was free to connect some good passes. She was very aggressive on the ball and displayed a great ability to beat opponents off the dribble, often requiring the attention of multiple players. Nguyen was very dangerous taking the ball to the end line and finding passes to teammates who were entering the penalty box to finish. Very good at creating for her teammates, she also did well by taking the ball inside, as in the play that resulted in the team's second goal, and often timed her passes well. Johnson used her size to deflect long passes and her physical tools to control the game on the floor, making smart anticipations, winning 50-50 balls and dispossessing opponents. With Rise keeping the ball in the attacking third for most of the match, the goalkeeper had to make several interventions and was consistent and reliable in each of them. Hernandez handled shots from distance well and also left the goal to collect crosses with great efficiency. She also displayed good reflexes to get off her line and stop quick plays and to react to close-range finishes.
