How to Determine Which Level of Post HS Soccer Fits You Best
The journey toward playing soccer at the next level is a time-consuming endeavor filled with potential, ambition, and many questions. One of the most pressing questions young athletes and their families face is figuring out their next level. Are you a PRO, Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, or JUCO recruit? Understanding where you fit within these levels is crucial to not just achieving your athletic dreams but also ensuring a fulfilling college experience.
The First Step: Understanding the Divisions
Before diving into self-assessment, it’s vital to grasp what each division offers.
Going pro after high school soccer is the rarest route, but it does happen! In our national 2024 rankings, we have recorded 3 girls and 19 boys going pro directly following their high school career.
Division I schools are often characterized by their intense competitive environments and significant time commitments to sports. Only the top 1-2% of high school athletes earn a spot on a Division I team.
Division II balances athletics with academics a little more evenly, offering a competitive landscape but with more flexibility for student-athletes. Keep in mind though, Division II is extremely competitive as well, and the main difference between Division I and Division II is that there is less athletic scholarship money to offer for D2s.
Division III focuses primarily on the student experience, emphasizing participation and personal growth over athletic scholarships and competition. Division III athletics are still VERY high level. In fact, several Division III schools have beaten Division II schools in exhibition games in recent history.
NAIA is a non-NCAA division that mirrors that of Division II and Division III with top competition, and the ability to offer some athletic scholarships.
JUCO is a great level for many players, offering a launching pad to play at other divisions after 1 or 2 years. JUCOs give players the opportunity to complete general ed requirements and boost their academic standing.
