Off the ball, he is very vocal, constantly giving instructions and communicating with his team, and opens up well to be a passing option. He also has an excellent understanding of the game, having great judgement, timing his tackles well, knowing when and not to step up or drop, and holding his line. Despite McLure's larger stature, he does very well to get himself off the ground to win aerial duels and for spectacular attempts. With cut-throat finishing, he strikes the ball with accuracy and venom. He is also very tidy on the ball, keeping it close to his at all times. Playing in a more defensive role, he is physical, aggressive, technical, and communicative. He has a straightforward, no-nonsense approach: prevent the opposing team from scoring at all costs. He times his tackles well, using sliding and stepping techniques, and leverages his body and speed to push players off the ball. He consistently communicates with his teammates, encouraging them throughout the game. When off the ball, he maintains his position and covers open spaces effectively. When he has the ball, he skillfully distributes it, delivering accurate passes to feet as well as playing long balls over the top. He is great with the ball, keeping it close to his feet and confidently carrying it up the field. He isn't afraid to exploit open space and take shots on goal. If he finds himself caught out of position, Kovac quickly recovers by either dropping back or chasing down the opposing player. He uses his strength well to hold players at bay.
