The Spring high school season is well underway in the Richmond area, as most teams have completed about half of their regular season schedule. We have made it through the part of the season where you wear shorts and a t-shirt for the JV game and then have to pull out sweats and heated blankets by halftime of the Varsity game - congrats! We are starting with region 6A on the girls side.

In case you are not aware, the region A part of Class 6 schools in Virginia is split between the Richmond area and Tidewater. There are 11 total schools in this region. The top eight will qualify for the regional tournament.

Photo: Josh Muir, Josh Muir Photography

The Deep Run Wildcats have started this season in dominant fashion, winning 9 of their first 10, including wins against Western Albemarle, Godwin, and Freeman. They return 8 starters from last season. [player_tooltip player_id='164462' first='Mackenzie' last='Vanags'], Alevia Colombell, and senior GK Karli Ross have taken over leadership of the back line, and they have done a great job so far, conceding only one goal through ten games! The Deep Run midfield includes [player_tooltip player_id='171236' first='Audrey' last='Simpkins'] and [player_tooltip player_id='170045' first='Sophia' last='Calisto'], two do-it-all midfielders with a great amount of experience. In the attacking third, the Wildcats will rely on Monique McEnhimer, and MTSU commit, Tori Gauch. These two combied for 27 goals last season, and are still just juniors! Simpkins, Gauch, McEnhimer, and Vanags were all-region selections last Spring. [player_tooltip player_id='222965' first='Bella' last='Villasana'] is poised for a breakout season. The pacey, skilled sophomore forward has a great work rate, and a strong desire to improve each and every day. Look for her to get some all-region votes this season, and make her mark in the playoffs. This team is absolutely loaded with talent and experience.

Outlook - The Wildcats should be the favorites to win the region again. With that comes a big responsibility - getting every other team's best, every game. Any of the names I mentioned above could take home the regional player of the year, but the bigger goal for this team is to stay focused and hungry to compete for a state title.

Photo: Jeff Sicat

The Glen Allen girls are currently 6-1-1, with wins over Atlee, Hanover, and James River. The Jaguars are anchored by Maddie Sicat, a sophomore defender who plays her club ball for [program_tooltip program_id='283449' first='Richmond' last='United']. Hood College commit, Maddy Ereso, is a captain and a 4 year player in the midfield for Glen Allen. Emma Sicat, committed to play at Williams College, will be relied on for a lot of the goal-scoring. The Jaguars have already almost equaled their win total from last Spring, a sign of the hard work that Coach Dixon and her staff have put in. Last year, the Jaguars lost in the first round of the region playoffs as a 7 seed. They are currently competing to have a home playoff game in the first round this season, and have two big matches coming up with Deep Run, where they will hope to make a huge statement.

Outlook - Those two games still coming up against Deep Run will likely determine the #1 seed in the 6A tourney. The second matchup against Godwin also looms large in the playoff seeding for Glen Allen. If the Jags win all 3, they are likely the top seed... but that is a tall task for anyone. The Jaguars will look to lock up a home playoff game to set themselves up for a potential state tournament berth.

Photo: Manchester HS Girls

The Manchester Lancers also ended their season last year in the regional quarterfinals. This season, the Lancers have started 8-3. Their attack is led by [player_tooltip player_id='110268' first='Kylie' last='Osborne'], who had an outstanding freshman season last Spring, and Brooke Kondracki, a physical goal scorer. Ella Puckett and Chesney Beekman are 4 year defensive starters for the Lancers. The versatile Allie Davis, and Osvirian Arce-Torres, will likely hold down the midfield, controlling the pace of play. With a spirited win over Cosby already under their belt, Manchester find themselves in a similar position to Glen Allen - hoping to secure a home playoff game. The second games against Cosby and Monacan will be very important to the standings.

Outlook - The Lancers have played a few more games than the other teams on this list, so their road is a little clearer. They will likely need a win against either Cosby or Monacan to earn a top 4 seed. They were in the 4/5 game last year, but as the road team. Travel is a bigger factor in this region than in others, since the region is split. A 2-hour bus ride to the beach could very well be the difference between moving on to a state tourney play-in game and a first-round exit.

Photo: Josh Muir, Josh Muir Photography

Cosby find themselves in unfamiliar territory at this point in the season, still needing some wins to lock down a playoff spot. They have begun the season 5-4-1, largely due to a rash of injuries. [player_tooltip player_id='140779' first='Kendall' last='Funk'], a Radford commit, leads the attack for the Titans. Oakland University commit [player_tooltip player_id='140781' first='Corinne' last='Jenkins'] is a prominent figure in the midfield, and Randolph Macon commit Abby Holmes anchors the back line. All three have missed time with injuries already this season, among others. The Titans hope to be getting healthy at the right time with tough matchups against Midlothian, James River, Atlee, and Monacan still ahead. Cosby lost to Midlo and James River the first time around, and tied Monacan. [player_tooltip player_id='110227' first='Piper' last='Burke'], who has also missed some time due to injury, has helped to solidify the midfield when she is on the field. As she continues to get comfortable, look for her to have a bigger impact in games. The same can be said for [player_tooltip player_id='222400' first='Lila' last='Posey'], who has had to "grow up" quickly this season, with a much bigger responsibility on defense. Both are capable players that can take advantage of these expanded roles to help get this ship going in the right direction.

Outlook - The injuries have been tough, but they also give others chances to play. With a healthy Funk, Jenkins, Holmes, and Burke, the rest of the group can fill their expected roles, and the experience should make them stronger. Ella Stroud and Bella Arrellano have had solid performances and will look to continue to build on those. If and when Cosby gets going, I would expect Julia Jaeger to show her dynamic wing play more consistently.

[player_tooltip player_id='110227' first='Piper' last='Burke'] and [player_tooltip player_id='222400' first='Lila' last='Posey'], Josh Muir Photography

Thomas Dale currently sit at 5-6 and will look to win most of their last 5 games to have a chance at a playoff game. The Knights' best win so far this season was 3-2 against Prince George.

I look forward to seeing how this all shakes out. Deep Run definitely have the best odds of earning one of the two state tournament berths from this region. The second spot is up for grabs between Glen Allen, Western Branch, Grassfield, Landstown, and Cosby.

The Spring high school season is well underway in the Richmond area, as most teams have completed about half of their regular season schedule. We have made it through the part of the season where you wear shorts and a t-shirt for the JV game and then have to pull out sweats and heated blankets by halftime of the Varsity game - congrats!
