The MLS Next 2024-2025 season was officially concluded on Monday, when the league's All-Star Game was held in Austin.

Over the last ten months, Prep Soccer Texas got to follow many of the matches played across the U14, U15, U16, U17 and U19 age groups held in Texas, getting to watch first-hand most of the highly talented prospects from the Lone Star State compete and develop with their teams.

While MLS academies tend to feature the top players in the region and receive more attention and interest from those watching, we were able to shortlist interesting players from all over the state, highlighting the elevated level of play in the Lone Star State.

Now, with no matches scheduled until September, we'll take some time to feature prospects from non-MLS academies who displayed tremendous potential throughout the last season. This time, we'll look into some center backs who had solid seasons:

Hoerner was part of GFI's U14 squad, but spent most of the season playing up and starting with the club's U15 team. His ability to read the game and anticipate plays is a big part of his game as it allows him to intercept passes and win possession without having to physically challenge opponents - what he can also do, if needed. Hoerner also displays a very high soccer IQ for a player of his age, as he consistently pops up in good spots to make stops and knows when to step up and chase opponents upfield to deny them space to get on the ball. The defender is also very calm and poised on the ball and actively takes part in the team's buildup.

Michel captained the [program_tooltip program_id='283639' first='Dallas' last='Hornets'] U16 team in his first season with the club and was one of their standouts, getting to play up with their U17 team on some occasions. He's a very complete center back, who combines physical, technical and mental skills in a very productive way and is strong at defending in different ways. Michel is very active inside his team's penalty box, often managing to clear crosses and block shots, but is also mobile enough to defend in space. The team's vocal leader, he also performs well in possession, connecting intelligent passes out of the back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNb9EHxh70w

Salguero captained the [program_tooltip program_id='283658' first='Houston' last='Rangers'] U16 team during the season and played different roles in the team's backline. He spent some time at left back, but then moved to central defense, anchoring their defensive system. Salguero is extremely well-versed on the defensive side of the game, displaying great positioning, playing with great determination and making firm defensive actions to stop plays. He's also a very skilled ball-playing center back, who's not afraid to dribble the ball forward and can find teammates in great spots with his accurate long passes.

[program_tooltip program_id='283658' first='Houston' last='Rangers'] U16 vs. [program_tooltip program_id='283639' first='Dallas' last='Hornets'] U16

Hernandez was part of the IDEA Toros U17 team during the last season. Playing as a right-sided center back, he was one of the pillars of their backline, using his excellent mobility to cover ground and defend in different spots around the penalty box. Despite not being very tall or physical, he also appears well when making stops inside the box, benefiting from his great positioning to get to the ball first. Hernandez also has the quality to play a big role in the team's buildup, doing a good job of making himself available for his teammates and displaying calm and confidence to connect passes out of the back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEsJUP-gqII

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eszrnrOPkik
