Two unbeaten teams in the ECNL Regional League Virginia squared off on Sunday at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach. The 03/04 U18 Richmond Strikers (1-0-2) looked to stay out of the loss column vs a U18 Beach FC side with an identical (1-0-2) record. Beach jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half on goals by Karleigh Minson, Taryn Goodwin, and Molly Westerman and coasted to a 4-0 win to improve to 2-0-2.
Girls who stood out:
F Karleigh Minson, Beach FC, First Colonial, Class of 2022 (committed to Longwood University)
A clinical finisher who has can finish from anywhere in the box! Karleigh was the 757 Teamz All-Tidewater Player of the Year after leading First Colonial to a 13-1-1 record and a Class 5 VHSL State Championship in the spring of 2021. Possesses great 1 v 1 skills and looks to attack defenders while going to goal. She can play in the middle or as a wide forward and has the speed to get around defenders. A leader on and off the pitch, her character is second to none.
MF Brianna Cassidy, Richmond Strikers, Godwin, Class of 2022
A solid defender who plays a traditional 6 very well. Great awareness of attacking players in her area of responsibility. Stayed at home for the majority of the game as her team was defending a larger part of the time. Kept her head up and looked to distribute when she gained possession. Not afraid to challenge for 50/50 balls in the middle of the pitch.
D Sydney Roberson, Beach FC, Menchville, Class of 2022
A truly versatile player who can play anywhere on the pitch! The last time I saw her play, she was leading her Menchville High School team to the Class 4 VSHL Finals as a forward where she scored over 30 goals her junior year. I didn’t expect to see her playing left back for Beach but she was a force, winning numerous balls in the air and shutting down her side of the field. Very dangerous while making runs on the outside with or without the ball. Very relaxed with the ball at her feet, does not force the action, and is content with keeping possession and swinging it back around if there are no options going forward. All-Tidewater First Team selection in 2021.
F Taryn Goodwin, Beach FC, Norfolk Collegiate, Class of 2022
Another all-around talented player who can move around the pitch and contribute from numerous positions. Plays a center defensive mid role for her high school team where she also scored eight goals as a junior. Was the best player on her Norfolk Collegiate team and led them to a Tidewater Conference finals berth and a trip to the VISAA state quarterfinals. Has a powerful lower body and deceptive speed moving without the ball. Made great diagonal runs with good spatial awareness of everything going on around her. All-Tidewater First Team selection in 2021.
2022 Player commitments:
Isabella Cooke, Beach FC, West Point
Chloe Limbach, Beach FC, Virginia Commonwealth University
Hailey Rorick, Beach FC, Dartmouth University
Zoe Villarreal, Beach FC, University of Lynchburg
Lauren Brokaw, Richmond Strikers, Randolph-Macon College
