Great River Classic: Day 2 results

After all three FAB 50-ranked teams in the Great River Classic Medical Bracket advanced to the semifinals, it was time for head-to-head meetings, and Marquette (Wis.) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.) emerged. Those two will play Saturday for the title of the top bracket at the event.
Here are the results from Friday’s matches:
Marquette (Wis.) 3, J. Sterling Morton (Ill.) 0: Miguel Gonzalez, Nick Manger, and Sean Dankert scored in a six-minute stretch with less than 10 minutes to go to give FAB 50 No. 21 Marquette the win over FAB 50 No. 12 J. Sterling Morton to advance to the championship game of the Great River Medical Bracket. CJ Deslongchamps CJ Deslongchamps GK Marquette | 2023 WI recorded his second shutout of the tournament for the Hilltopers.
St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.) 2, Barrington (Ill.) 1: Ethan Young’s two first-half goals were enough for FAB 50 No. 36 St. Thomas Aquinas to advance to the championship game of the Great River Medical bracket. Young has scored three goals so far in the tournament. Barrington’s second-half goal was scored on a direct kick by Jeremiah Gascho.
Gateway Legacy Christian (Mo.) 1, Naperville North (Ill.) 0: Guilherme Melchiori’s goal early in the first half proved to be the game-winner as the Lions held on for the win over the Huskies.
Mount Carmel (Ill.) 2, Peoria Notre Dame (Ill.) 0: Chris Bueno and Irving Moreno scored goals early in the game to lead the Caravan to victory in the Great River Medical bracket. Andres Comp recorded the shutout.
Morton (Ill.) 2, Quincy (Ill.) 1: Braden Demotte scored a goal in each half to lift Morton to victory. Quincy jumped out to an early lead on a goal from Boen Brockmiller. Demotte’s second goal came with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
Washburn Rural (Kan.) 3, Quincy Notre Dame (Ill.) 1: Devon Rutschmann and Porter Schafersman gave Washburn Rural an early lead to improve their record to 2-0 on the weekend. Tanner Anderson scored for QND to cut the lead in half, but Easton Bradstreet scored early in the second half for the Junior Blues.
Dunlap (Ill.) 5, Springfield (Ill.) 1: Drew Wisdom scored three goals to lead Dunlap to the convincing victory. Wisdom scored the opening goal but was answered by the Senators Ryan Shaw to tie things up at 1. The Eagles scored four straight, getting goals from Serban Oancea and Paul Balea.
Moline (Ill.) 2, Blue Valley North (Kan.) 1: Jaeger Norton opened the scoring for Moline to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead at the half. Jonny Emerson tied things up for Blue Valley North, before Izaiha McDowell scored the game-winner for Moline with seven minutes left.
Wheaton Academy (Ill.) 3, Althoff Catholic (Ill.) 2 (PK): Declan Finnegan stopped two penalty kicks for Wheaton Academy and Josiah Pitts Josiah Pitts D Wheaton Academy | 2023 IL scored the winning kick to advance to the semifinals of the Heartland Lodge bracket. Robert Platt and Haetham Nasr scored during regulation for Wheaton Academy and Ryann Myatt and Hank Gomric scored for Althoff.
Evanston (Ill.) 8, Normal University (Ill.) 0: FAB 50-ranked Evanston cruised to a victory.
Glenbard North (Ill.) 2, Normal Community (Ill.) 1: Glenbard North benefitted from an own goal with less than five minutes remaining in the game to knock off the Ironmen. The Panthers took the lead on a goal by Christian Escobedo. Normal Community tied things up on a goal by Alberto Canas.
Moline (Moline, Ill.) 1, Middleton (Wis.) 1: What looked to be an offensive explosion turned into a defensive battle. Both teams scored in the first three minutes of the game. Moline opened the scoring on a goal by Saiheed Jai. Middleton answered less than a minute later on a Chris VandenBoom goal.
Normal West (Ill.) 4, Highland (Ill.) 1
Chatham Glenwood (Ill.) 2, Rock Island (Ill.) 1: Goals by Landon Marconi and Ebenezer Reed led Chatham Glenwood to victory.
