It was a big week for Milwaukee Marquette (Wis.) as it defeated three quality teams at the Great River Classic in Burlington, Iowa. The Hilltoppers are 15-1-1 this season and heavy contenders to win the Division 1 State Championship. Here’s a look at some of their top performers from their impressive weekend that included wins over J. Sterling Morton (Ill.), Mount Carmel (Ill.), and St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.).
<strong><span style="font-size: 1rem;">GK [player_tooltip player_id="30972" first="CJ" last="Deslongchamps"], Jr.</span></strong>
Deslongchamps had two of his three clean sheets last week at the Great River Classic, including two against Illinois teams Mount Carmel and Morton. He might be the state’s best goalkeeper.
<strong>F [player_tooltip player_id="32548" first="Nick" last="Magner"], Sr.</strong>
Magner did his usual part with two goals against historically good Mount Carmel and another goal against state power Morton.
<strong>D [player_tooltip player_id="18509" first="Sam" last="Magner"], Sr.</strong>
In the wins against Mount Carmel and Morton, Magner led the backline which did not allow a single shot on target. He even had an assist against Mount Carmel. He is one of the top defenders in Wisconsin.
<strong>F [player_tooltip player_id="18515" first="Valentin" last="Sandoval"], Sr.</strong>
After a two-goal performance against conference rival Wauwatosa East, Sandoval off an excellent week with the game-winning assist in overtime against St. Thomas Aquinas. He also scored in that game and had another goal against Morton the game prior.
<strong>M [player_tooltip player_id="18488" first="Miguel" last="Gonzalez"], Sr</strong>
Gonzalez scored the game-winner against St. Thomas Aquinas in overtime to capture the tournament title. He also added an assist that game and a goal against Morton.
