St. Augustine (Calif.) and Torrey Pines (Calif.) were the big winners this past week at the SoCal College Showcase and SoCal High School Classic, respectively.
While the SoCal College Showcase had preset pairings, St. Augustine was the only team to go 3-0. Meanwhile, at the tournament-style High School Classic, highly ranked Torrey Pines defeated San Clemente in a clash of undefeated teams in the championship match.
Here’s a recap of Thursday’s action:
<strong>5th ANNUAL SoCAL COLLEGE SHOWCASE</strong>
<strong>St. Augustine (Calif.) 2, Loyola (Calif.) 1</strong>: Tanner Wick delivered the match-winning goal in the 68th minute as St. Augustine capped a perfect showing with a win over Loyola. Senior Beau Stellar scored for Loyola on an assist from senior Dane Kemple, both first for them.
<strong>Bellarmine Prep (Calif.) 1, Servite (Calif.) 1:</strong> Kasdan Blattman scored, assisted by Jorge Sosa, as Bellarmine finished 1-0-2 at the event. [player_tooltip player_id="8016" first="Justin" last="Faison"] scored on an assist from Eddie Villeda for Servite.
<strong>Cathedral (Calif.) 3, St. Paul’s (La.) 0: </strong>Cathedral finished 1-1-1 at the event with an impressive tournament-ending victory.
<strong>De La Salle (Calif.) 2, Orange Lutheran (Calif.) 0</strong>: [player_tooltip player_id="7081" first="Anthony" last="Zaldua"] and [player_tooltip player_id="7934" first="Jordan" last="Kennedy"] netted the goals that lifted De La Salle to the victory.
<strong>Thursday’s Standout Players</strong>
D <strong>Monte Baier</strong>, Loyola (Calif..), Jr. -- Baier played every minute of the three games.
M <strong>Kasdan Blattman</strong>, Bellarmine (Calif.), Sr. -- Although not a scorer, he delivered a clutch goal for a tie with Servite. He was the Bells’ MVP for the event and walked away with 10 colleges interested in him.
F <strong>Charlie Hogan</strong>, De La Salle (Calif.) -- Hogan played through an injury sustained in Loyola match to lead the attack. He created chances and also contributed on the defensive end.
GK <strong>Mikey Macias</strong>, Bellarmine (Calif.), Sr. -- Macias allowed only one goal in three matches.
Ds <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="7815" first="James" last="Moore"]</strong> and <strong>Christian Fajardo</strong>, both juniors at Bellarmine (Calif.) -- The Bells had the strongest defensive showing than any of the event’s teams, led by a pair of juniors, Moore and Fajardo.
D <strong>Lucas Piazza</strong>, Loyola (La.), Jr. -- Piazza was able to shut down Cathedral’s leading scorer.
DM <strong>Noah Schwenger</strong>, De La Salle (Calif.), Sr. -- He broke up many attacks and did a great job of initiating attacking transitions once he won the ball.
M <strong>Danny Wayert</strong>, St. Paul’s (La.) -- Wayert created St. Paul’s best chances Thursday.
<strong>26th ANNUAL SoCAL HIGH SCHOOL CLASSIC</strong>
<strong>Final: </strong><strong>Torrey Pines (Calif.) 2, San Clemente (Calif.) 1:</strong> [player_tooltip player_id="8743" first="Tye" last="Barton"] converted a penalty kick for the go-ahead goal as Torrey Pines edged San Clemente in the National Division final that pitted a pair of highly ranked undefeated programs. Wyatt Gardner, usually the team’s reserve keeper, stepped up for a big performance, making two clutch saves as Torrey Pines improved to 10-0-1. <strong>Third Place: Richmond (Calif.) 3, San Dieguito (Calif.) 2.</strong> Richmond used a late goal to edge San Dieguito. Gavin Culley scored twice for San Dieguito.
<strong>Fifth Place: San Pasqual (Calif.) 2, Hoover (Calif.) 1.</strong>
