<p>There was something in the air today at SilverLakes Sports Complex as the 2026 Girls Academy Playoffs officially got underway. The level of competition immediately lived up to the occasion, with several nationally recognized clubs battling for a chance to continue their postseason run.</p>   <p>The first match I watched featured IMG Academy U16 against La Morinda in a thrilling contest that, early on, looked like it would be one-sided. La Morinda came out flying, taking a commanding 2-0 lead and controlling the momentum. IMG Academy battled back to cut the deficit to one and refused to go away quietly, but La Morinda ultimately held on for a hard-fought 4-3 victory.</p>   <p>While the scoreline was entertaining enough, the match also showcased several high-level Division I prospects. Two players, in particular, separated themselves from the rest with performances that demonstrated why they'll be competing at some of the nation's premier college programs.</p>   <p>As the evening rolled on, the spotlight shifted to the younger age groups, where City SC San Diego U14 squared off against TopHat SC out of Georgia in another highly anticipated playoff matchup.</p>   <p>In the 8:00 p.m. slot, I watched Indy Premier take on Shore FC, and this match made one thing clear: Indy Premier is a program worth keeping a close eye on. Their style of play is polished, with crisp ball movement, excellent spacing, and a willingness to play through pressure rather than around it. Defensively, they were just as impressive, staying organized, limiting quality chances, and making life difficult for Shore FC throughout the match. If this performance is any indication, Indy Premier has established a strong identity and looks like a club capable of competing with anyone they face. <br></p>    <p>If there was a Player of the Match today, it was Ella Kral.</p>   <p>The Stanford commit and youth national team player delivered a performance worthy of the spotlight, scoring twice in La Morinda's thrilling 4-3 victory over IMG Academy. Her first goal was an absolute rocket from distance, while her second displayed the composure and clinical finishing of a top-level striker.</p>   <p>Perhaps even more impressive than the goals themselves was the timing. With IMG Academy pushing for an equalizer late, Kral produced the insurance goal that effectively ended any hopes of a comeback. Given her physical presence and the fact that she was leading the line for IMG Academy, I figured she would be a player worth watching—and she didn't disappoint.</p>   <p>Although IMG Academy ultimately fell 4-3 to La Morinda, Deligans remained one of the biggest bright spots on the field. The University of Tennessee commit showed exactly why she'll be joining the Volunteers, combining strength, confidence, and technical quality in the final third.</p>   <p>Her goal was a moment of individual brilliance. Deligans flicked the ball over a defender not once, but twice, completely taking over the sequence before calmly finishing to cap off one of the best individual plays of the match. The MLS NEXT player has consistently impressed me, and with every match I become more confident that she's on a path that could eventually earn her an opportunity with the U.S. Youth National Team.</p>   <p>Her game is built on quality. Broughton is a confident dribbler who consistently creates advantages in possession, but what stands out even more is her vision and distribution. She has the ability to unlock defenses with her passing while remaining composed under pressure.</p>   <p>One of the best examples came in City SC San Diego's matchup against TopHat, where Broughton delivered a perfectly weighted, curling cross into the box that resulted in the opening goal. She accelerated past the defender, gained leverage, and put herself in a dangerous position before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. It was a composed finish that showcased not only her athleticism but also her confidence in front of goal.</p>   <p>What impressed me most was how naturally the play unfolded for her. Many players rely solely on speed in those situations, but Skylar combined timing, awareness, and composure to turn a half-chance into a goal. Those qualities are difficult to teach and are often what separate top prospects from the rest of the field.</p>   <p>As Indy Premier looks to make a deep playoff run, expect Skylar to remain one of the focal points of their attack. The urgency and intensity were evident throughout the day, and if the opening slate is any indication, the level of competition will only continue to rise as the tournament progresses.</p>   <p>Players like Ella Kral, Carsyn Deligans, Eve Broughton, and Skylar each found ways to separate themselves, showcasing why the Girls Academy Playoffs remain one of the best stages in the country for elite young talent.
