Top-level, nationally ranked, and college committed players are ready for another year of prep soccer.

USE THE PROMO CODE almasin30 for a discount on your first subscription

Part 2 of the SoCal Series features the defending Division 1 State Champions, the Mater Dei Monarchs and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The number 2-ranked Monarchs led the charge with the 3rd-ranked team after #1 ranked Santa Margarita Eagles.

There's no exact science to ranking these teams in order, but the method I've chosen was based on the number of returning club players and returners competing at a high level. Also, the way they ended their season and performance in the post-season played a part. Yet, I will probably overlook some teams by accident, so please bear with me.

When it comes to historic runs, the Mater Dei Monarchs had all the makings of an epic run. Last season, they came in ready to make a claim to the historic California Division I title. With an impressive 14 shutouts in the 29 matches, the key to the Monarchs' success could possibly go through their top-level defense. They had an impressive record of 18-3-8, with two losses to 3rd-ranked Santa Margarita and one loss to Notre Dame (SO), the 20th-ranked team in California. The Monarchs ended last season as the #1 ranked team in CA and the #9 in the nation.

In the battle of the juggernauts, the Bishop O'Dowd Dragons were also in the hunt with an impressive 19-0 record, while winning a treble as league champs and NCS Open Champions, as well as the NorCal regional champs. Their super impressive 15 shutouts were also eclipsed by a goal differential of 96 goals, with 102 for and only 6 against. I've previously covered their NCS open championship match against Carondelet, and their fully healthy team seemed unbeatable. Yet, with a few key injuries and player illnesses, they would be in a battle against a healthy and well-rotated Monarchs team that won by the slightest of margins, decided by just one goal.

Of course, there will be further debate on the Monarchs possibly earning the preseason number one spot, but surely one could honestly argue that the Santa Margarita Eagles have one of the most impressive returning rosters not only in CA but possibly a top 5 in the nation. The quality of the top two teams is indeed elite-level.

Ranked, Notable, and Possible Returning Players for Mater Dei Monarchs:

[player_tooltip player_id='147282' first='Kendra' last='Hansen'] - 2028 - Midfielder - Ranked #3 in CA, #1 in position, and #2 in the nation - Stanford commit

[player_tooltip player_id='290422' first='Bonnie' last='Earl'] - 2029 - Forward/Defender - Ranked #10 in CA, #3 in position, and #28 in the nation

[player_tooltip player_id='287733' first='Sophia' last='Di Gerlando'] - 2027 - Forward - Ranked #275 in CA and #107 in position

[player_tooltip player_id='112209' first='Addalynn' last='Rodriguez'] - 2027 - Defender - Colorado State commit

Addison Doria - 2027 - Forward - Nevada commit

Natalie Goodwin - 2027 - Defender

Brooklynne Thies - 2027 - Forward/Defender

[player_tooltip player_id='334090' first='Katerina' last='Tseheridis'] - 2028 - Defender/Midfielder

Luciana Mendiola - 2028 - Midfielder

[player_tooltip player_id='112266' first='Ella' last='Priest'] - 2028 - Goalkeeper - WL in CA and WL in Position

The Cleveland Cavaliers, from Reseda, CA, had a great season last year, going 18-3-3 overall. Their losses came from top-level teams such as Moorpark, Westlake, and Santa Margarita in the Regional Semifinals of the Division 1 SoCal bracket. They posted a first-place league record of 9-0-1. Their efforts gave them the #10 ranking in CA and #57 in the nation. The Cavaliers will also be a team that will keep the momentum going and attempt to make another deep run in the state playoffs and contend possibly for a state title.

Notable and Possible Returning Players for Cleveland Cavaliers:

Amber Ramirez - 2027 - Midfielder/Forward

Catalina Aguila - 2027 - Midfielder

Milan Lona - 2028 - Defender

Ava Ebrahimi - 2028 - Goalkeeper

Standouts from Last Year's Division 1 Title Match - Mater vs. Bishop O'Dowd

Addison Doria (Mater Dei) - Get's the 1st Goal of the Match in the opening 5 minutes of the 2nd half.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2032992426219155522?s=20

[player_tooltip player_id='112266' first='Ella' last='Priest'] (Mater Dei) - Made 6 Key saves to preserve the Monarchs victory and the Inaugural Division 1 State Title.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2034116936213401902?s=20

Bonus Footage #1: Clash of the Titans (Bishop O'Dowd vs. Mater Dei)

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2032973738078322812?s=20

Bonus Footage #2: Tied 0-0 at the Half (Bishop O'Dowd vs. Mater Dei)

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2032988952169427357?s=20

Bonus Footage #3: Mater Dei wins the CIF Division 1 State Final 2-0 (Bishop O'Dowd vs. Mater Dei)

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2033006462965002532?s=20

SoCal - Preseason Rankings - 2026-2027 - Full List

1.
