Girls Standout Stars From Indiana’s State Semifinals

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The final week of the Indiana High School Girls Soccer season is upon us. This Saturday, champions will be crowned at Caroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. But before we transition to State Championship weekend, we are going to look back at some of the best performances from the weekend that was. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Avarie Zeller, Senior, Evansville Memorial</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Avarie Zeller played a central role for Evansville Memorial as they advanced to the title game. The Tigers took down Indianapolis Bishop Chatard 2-0 in Evansville. Two goals in the second half made the difference, with Zeller the scorer of one goal and the provider for the other. Zeller's one goal one assist wound up being enough. The Tigers now have a date with destiny at the weekend against the Leo Lions in the Class 2A State Championship Game.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Lucy Furqueron, Senior, Park Tudor</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There were several top-tier goalkeeping performances. Furqueron recorded ten saves and maintained a clean sheet as Park Tudor defeated Evansville Mater Dei 1-0 in Evansville. The shutout was Furqueron's 14th of the season. Furqueron's ability to come up with big saves will be huge on Saturday. A few key saves could make the difference. Park Tudor will battle it out with Fort Wayne Canterbury.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Sofia Carver, Sophomore, Fort Wayne Canterbury</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In the 1A Championship Game, both teams will have the benefit of solid goalkeeping. Fort Wayne Canterbury had to grind out an extra time victory against Andrean. The 1-0 win required some clutch saves and Sofia Carver came up big when needed. Carver recorded seven saves, taking the total up to 154. This result should serve as a good confidence builder for Carver, not just for this weekend's match, but for her upperclassmen years.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Kate Wantuch, Sophomore, Andrean</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Andrean fell short against Canterbury this past Saturday, but a solid performance from Goalkeeper Kate Wantuch kept the team in the game. Wantuch kept a shutout until the second half of extra time. This performance was right in line with the solid year she had. On Saturday, she posted eight saves. On the year, Wantuch had a baker's dozen of shutouts.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
