Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
Papez stood out as the leader of D.C. United’s backline and the fact that his team conceded only twice in three matches speaks a lot about his game. Although not very tall or physical, the center back plays with good imposition, winning most of the duels he’s involved with, be it in the air or with his feet. Papez is also very talented and calm on the ball and most of the team’s buildup starts at his feet. He’s very efficient with his short passes, but often attempts long ones too, connecting them at a very good rate. Papez also plays a big leadership role with the team, pushing teammates up when they’re trailing or under pressure.

Much of D.C. United’s job of advancing to the Round of 16 was made when they kept a talented Sockers FC team scoreless for 90 minutes and Papez played a big role in that. The team captain, he led the team’s backline with authority and very solid play, shutting down numerous attempts. Papez benefited from his positioning to make stops, but also displayed very good pace and a great ability to tackle when he had to engage in 1v1 duels. The center back was also very strong in the air, clearing several crosses that were sent inside D.C.’s penalty box. He also had a role in the team’s buildup, connecting good passes from the back and displayed good vision to make some interesting long ball attempts.

The leader of United’s defense, Papez is an expert tackler and excellent at building possession from the back. Depending upon the opponent, he switches defensive midfield and center-back. That he can play both at a high level while also contributing to the attack makes him a very well-rounded player. In terms of his passing, he has a very good sense of timing and will either push ahead or wait depending upon how the opposition sets up. His pace makes him one of the better midfielders in MLS Next. Also, keep an eye out for him on set pieces as he is very comfortable making leaping efforts in dangerous places.
